MLB Breaking News: New York Mets' Daniel Murphy Suffers Season-Ending MCL Tear

Tom Urtz Jr.Jun 5, 2018

When the Mets squared off against the Atlanta Braves this afternoon, hope was in the air because rookie sensation Dillon Gee was on the mound.

Jair Jurrjens, who has been lightning hot this season, was scheduled to start for the Braves was scratched from his start during some point on Saturday.

Nonetheless, it started out as a typical game and Met fans got down when the Braves took an early lead. Just when the Mets got back into the game by generating some runs, Jose Reyes left the game with tightness in his hamstring.

Reyes leaving the game unfortunately proved to be catastrophic for the Mets. By sure happenstance without Reyes in the game, the Mets had to shuffle the infield around when Murphy pinch hit late in the game.

Lucas Duda moved to first base, Daniel Murphy slid over to second base, David Wright returned to his roots and played shortstop and Nick Evans took over at the hot corner.

The inning started out just like any other until a routine double play would untimely end the surging Murphy's season.

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York tweeted the following late Sunday night.

"

"

This is a big blow to the Mets, who were making their season relevant for fans despite trailing the Braves in the NL Wild Card race.

Murphy was batting .318 with six homers and 48 RBI. He was an offensive monster for the Mets and was redeeming himself for his past offensive blunders and mishaps.

A grade II MCL tear usually requires three to four weeks of rest and recuperation. With little time left in the season it was prudent for the Mets to shut Murphy down.

Murphy needs to recover from this injury and strengthen himself during the offseason. If Murphy heals quickly, develops himself defensively, and has a great spring training, he will come back better than ever next season for the Mets.
