UFC 133 Results: 5 Reasons Why Fans Were Proven Wrong (Again) by UFC 133

Matt SaccaroJun 7, 2018

UFC 133 was initially set to be an exciting card and was a highly anticipated event. Unfortunately, the card became the most injury-prone in UFC history and many of the original fights were scrapped.

This left the main event as a fight between former light heavyweight champions Rashad Evans and Tito Ortiz and the co-main event a scrap between Vitor Belfort and Yoshihiro Akiyama.

The rest of the card didn't have anything too spectacular on it, either.

Because of the seemingly lackluster card, many fans criticized the event and said that it wasn't worth watching. However, the detractors were proven wrong as they were with similar events in the past.

UFC 133 turned out to be a great card to watch. Why? Read and find out!

Four (T)KO Finishes out of Five Main-Card Fights

1 of 5

If people complain about the amount of "boring" decisions in the UFC, just show them UFC 133.

Of the five main-card fights, four of them ended by way of thrilling (T)KO, none of which were past the second round.

Rory MacDonald finished Mike Pyle via TKO, Brian Ebersole defeated Dennis Hallman via TKO, Vitor Belfort defeated Yoshihiro Akiyama via KO and Rashad Evans defeated Tito Ortiz via TKO.

With four decisive finishes out of five main-card fights, who can complain?

Dennis Hallman's "Shorts"

2 of 5

Referring to Hallman's Octagon attire as shorts is so generous that it requires quotation marks, as in the title above.

Fans who missed UFC 133 because they thought it wasn't worth paying for didn't get to take part in one of the most hilarious and memorable events in UFC history, and in television history in general, since Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction."

What is being referred to? Hallman wore a ridiculously revealing speedo and his genitalia even briefly (forgive the pun) slipped out and was shown to the world.

The Rise of the Prospects

3 of 5

Two fights on the main card and one fight on the Spike TV preliminaries each showcased an up-and-coming prospect versus a grizzled veteran, and in each fight, the prospect won.

Highly skilled welterweight phenom Rory MacDonald plowed through Mike Pyle, Swedish sensation Alexander Gustafsson defeated the once highly regarded Matt Hamill and Costantinos Philippou narrowly edged the always dangerous Jorge Rivera.

Fans who watched the event can say that they saw the rising prospects winning before they were champions.

The Return of Vitor Belfort

4 of 5

Vitor Belfort is the owner of arguably the fastest hands in mixed martial arts as well as some devastating power punches.

Fans who tuned in to see UFC 133 earned the joy of seeing Belfort return to form against Yoshihiro Akiyama with a knockout less than two minutes into the first round.

The Ongoing Light Heavyweight Saga

5 of 5

At the crux of UFC 133 was the ongoing light heavyweight saga largely involving Rashad Evans.

Evans has a history with current UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones as well as challenger Quinton "Rampage" Jackson; there is legitimate bad blood between Evans and both fighters.

Thus, fans who watched Rashad Evans' victorious return in the Octagon were not only rewarded with a thrilling fight and a great knee to the solar plexus, but will also be rewarded with a greater emotional yield from finally seeing the feud between Evans and Jones or Evans and Rampage come to a resolution when Evans faces the winner of the Jones-Rampage bout.
