Fantasy Football: Why Percy Harvin Is a Must-Have in Every Fantasy League

Brian TaylorJun 7, 2018

The one guy who has been absent on everybody's fantasy football sleeper list is Percy Harvin.

Harvin is entering that critical third season where most receivers break out, and there are practically no other receivers on the Minnesota Vikings roster. He's a guy that you must grab in the middle rounds of your fantasy draft.

There has been all the talk about how the Vikings lost a critical member of their team when Sidney Rice signed with the Seattle Seahawks. For fantasy football owners and Percy Harvin, that was a godsend.

Harvin is now the clear cut No. 1 receiver on the Minnesota Vikings. Harvin's competition at the wide receiver position is Michael Jenkins, Greg Camarillo, Bernard Berrian and Devin Aromashodu. None of those guys are even No. 2 type receivers.

We all talk about the critical third season where wide receivers finally find their niche. Just last season, we saw Steve Johnson on the Buffalo Bills increase his receiving total of 10 yards in 2009 to 1,073 yards in 2010.

Mario Manningham on the Giants increased his receiving yards by 122 and his receiving touchdowns by 4. Lastly, how about Miles Austin? In 2009, he made the jump from 278 yards to 1,320 in his third season in the NFL.

A huge plus that Percy Harvin has going for him is the fact that he will have a good quarterback. So many critics have been claiming that Donovan McNabb is washed up. This is only because he went to the Redskins, a team that kills so many careers.

Prior to his season in Washington, McNabb threw for 3,500 yards and a 92.9 passer rating. After one season, he's washed up now? Please.

Remember how Brett Favre was washed up when he came to Minnesota? How about 4,200 yards and a 107.2 passer rating the next season? For whatever reason, it appears veteran quarterbacks are having success in Minnesota.

Despite playing in one less game than his rookie season, Harvin caught 11 more balls for 78 more yards. He also had 3 games of at least 100 yards, and one game with 97 yards receiving.

Let's not forget that Harvin will also get his touches in the running game. He only ran for slightly above 100 yards in each of his first 2 seasons, but fantasy owners will take every point they can.

Speaking of all the extra points he can add to your team, he's also returned 3 kicks for touchdowns in his career. The only real negative to Harvin's game is that there is always the chance of him missing one or two games due to migraines.

For a guy who's average draft position is 62 in ESPN leagues, he will produce as a top 40 player in fantasy leagues. Have no doubt in your mind that Harvin will top 1,000 yards receiving this season, and potentially score 10 or more total touchdowns.
