Liverpool vs. Valencia: Andy Carroll, Dirk Kuyt Score as Stewart Downing Shines

Eric PennellJun 1, 2018

Liverpool fans got their first chance to watch their beloved Reds perform at Anfield in the team's final preseason friendly Saturday, August 6th—one week before opening play begins in the English Premiere League.

Their opponent was the fleet footed, quick passing Valencia side that impressively placed third in La Liga last year, qualifying for the UCL. With considerable offseason spending by the 18-time EPL champs, all eyes were on the trio of new midfield signings: Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam.

Downing and Jordan had 60 minutes to impress manager Kenny Daglish, playing the left and right wings, respectively. Downing was by far the superior of the two as he consistently troubled the Valencia back line, fearlessly taking on any defender that trotted his way.

He played several pressing crosses from wide, directed right at the pony-tailed head of striker Andy Carroll, which is exactly what he was brought in to do. He also showed creativity off the ball with a few well-timed runs down the left, as well as an impressive run after cutting in toward midfield. In my mind, Stewart challenged Carroll for Man of the Match honors.

Jordan Henderson, however, did little to stand out during his hour-long run. The former Sunderland winger spent little time on the ball, and when he did, he often gave it right back to Valencia. Sure, it was only one game, but with Liverpool's riches in midfield, one must impress every chance he gets to compete for regular time.

Charlie Adam,

perhaps the club's highest profile new signing, played very well in stretches during his 75-minute stint. However, it seemed he would disappear for up to 10 minutes at a time, even as Liverpool dominated possession. His presence did not go completely unnoticed however, as he played countless corners and long balls with excellent precision.

As for other players, Andy Carroll had a near perfect outing. He pestered the opposing back line at midfield—intercepting lazy back passes on three occasions—and finishing with a goal on his first steal in the eighth minute. He was a problem up front all game long, especially for the diminutive Spanish team. His one error was an immature, vengeful tackle that rightfully earned him a yellow card. Reds fans will have to hope this isn't a regular occurrence.

Martin Kelly replaced Glen Johnson in the first 10 minutes after a small tweak. Martin finished the match out and played superbly. He came forward many times playing on-target crosses, while making several key plays on defense.

Things dragged a bit until first-teamers Dirk Kuyt, Joe Cole and Maxi Rodriguez came on together in the 60th, instantly providing a spark to the forward third. In the 88th, Cole's free kick was met with what seemed like the entire rest of the squad at the front of the net and Kuyt was able to finish.

Positive signs for the club as they look to earn their way back into the top four this season.
