My Top 10 Greatest Tag Teams of All Time

George NolanJun 7, 2018

Unless you tune in to TNA or Ring of Honor, you likely know of the state of shambles in which the tag team division currently is within the WWE.

Random wrestlers are put together for no real reason, and more often than not, they lack the chemistry of tag teams you seen from decades earlier.

This is quite a shame, as there have been notable tag teams in the past who worked well with one another and set the bar high on how tag teams can have their relevance and legacy within the history of professional wrestling.

So for this countdown, I'm here to offer up my thoughts on 10 tag teams who I believe are the greatest within the history of sports entertainment.

10. Demolition

1 of 10

Some have accused this team of being a Road Warriors knockoff.

But Ax and Smash proved to be one of the WWF's dominant tag teams during the late 1980s when they won three WWF Tag Team Title reigns, one of which is the longest in the history of the company to this day lasting 478 days and another where the team milked the Freebird Rule when Crush became a part of the team.

Demolition was notable for its feuds with The Powers of Pain (Warlord and Barbarian), the Brain Busters (Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard) and the Colossal Connection (Andre the Giant and Haku).

9. Harlem Heat

2 of 10

Booker T might be most remembered nowadays for being a multi-time WCW World Champion and currently being a commentator on WWE SmackDown.

But before becoming a successful singles wrestler, he partnered with his real-life brother Stevie Ray to form Harlem Heat in the 1990s.

The team managed to get over for being able to keep up with the top-level tag teams of the company they competed with such as the Steiner Brothers, Sting & Lex Luger and the Outsiders.

Harlem Heat was also notable for claiming the WCW World Tag Team Titles 10 times, the most within the time the company existed.

8. Steiner Brothers

3 of 10

You would find it hard to believe nowadays that before jacking himself up on muscle and being infamous for going overboard when delivering promos, Scott Steiner was considered a great technical wrestler alongside his brother Rick as The Steiner Brothers.

The Steiners were considered one of the top tag teams in pro wrestling during the early to mid 1990s, adopting a varsity wrestling gimmick and notable for their great mix of power, speed and agility with their style of wrestling.

The team had won tag team title gold from the NWA, IWGP (New Japan) and the WWF.

7. The Wild Samoans

4 of 10

Real-life brothers Afa and Sika Anoa'i formed this tag team of savages that ran through the 1970s and 1980s, winning 21 tag team championships, which included various NWA territories and the WWF.

They were the first successful Samoan wrestlers to acquire championship gold within professional wrestling.

6. The Dudley Boyz/Team 3-D

5 of 10

Bubba Ray and D-Von Dudley are perhaps the greatest tag team within the past 15 years of pro wrestling, and for good reason.

The two "brothers" from Dudleyville are the most decorated tag team within recent years, having won 23 tag team championships within the WWF/E, ECW, NWA, TNA and the IWGP.

The Dudleys are the most famous wrestlers to make use of tables during their matches as part of their gimmick and being part of the historic double TLC matches for the WWF Tag Team Titles at SummerSlam 2001 and Wrestlemania X-7 against the Hardy Boyz and Edge & Christian.

5. The Rock N' Roll Express

6 of 10

Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson are quite notable as this tag team of high-flying glam metal music lovers that ran through the 1980s and 1990s.

The Rock n Roll Express were at their most successful in the 1980s where they feuded with the likes of the Midnight Express and the Four Horsemen, as well as winning tag team title gold from several NWA territories, USWA and several other indy wrestling organizations.

4. The Midnight Express (Condrey and Eaton)

7 of 10

There have been several formations of the Midnight Express over the past three decades. But the formation which I will focus on and the most successful version of the team was the pairing of Dennis Condrey and Bobby Eaton.

Being managed by Jim Cornette and still strongly favored by the guy nowadays, the Midnight Express was notable throughout the mid-1980s for their rivalries with the Road Warriors, the Rock n Roll Express and the Fantastics (Bobby Fulton and Tommy Rogers).

Condrey and Eaton managed to win an impressive 31 tag team title reigns in several NWA territories under their formation of the Midnight Express.

3. The Von Erichs

8 of 10

Some might scream foul at me for nominating the whole family. But they are noteworthy enough to add on to this list.

One of pro wrestling's famous families, the Von Erichs consisting of Fritz, Kevin, David, Kerry and Mike were notable for their dominance within World Class Championship Wrestling where they won various championships (which include nearly three dozen tag team championship reigns total, five of which held by Kerry and Kevin) and engaged in various bloody matches with the Fabulous Freebirds, one of which received Match of the Year by the Wrestling Observer newsletter in 1984.

2. The Fabulous Freebirds

9 of 10

Consisting of Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy and Jimmy Garvin, the Fabulous Freebirds brought about two concepts that added new ideas to the formation of tag teams: the formation of a three-man team which was considered unusual when they formed in 1979 and creating the Freebird Rule.

The Freebird Rule was a gimmick that the Freebirds adopted during their stints in any NWA territory while in possession of tag team championships. Under the rule, any two members of the three-man group were allowed to defend the titles on any night.

The Freebirds were also famous for their heated and bloody rivalry with the Von Erich family and winning various tag team championships which included several NWA territories and WCW.

1. The Road Warriors/ Legion of Doom

10 of 10

This shouldn't come across as any surprise to long-time pro wrestling fans.

The team of Hawk and Animal are recognized as both innovators and being one of the most intimidating tag teams in the history of professional wrestling.

In terms of innovation, the Road Warriors were famous for popularizing the use of face paint, making use of power moves and their impressive physiques to win over fans and creating a tandem move in the form of the Doomsday Device.

The team was notable for quickly rising as top-level talents in their earliest formation in Georgia Championship Wrestling in the early 1980s, where their chemistry and popularity allowed them to be top-level tag teams within every wrestling promotion where they wrestled.

They also won a number of tag team title reigns throughout their two-decade run within pro wrestling, winning tag titles within AWA, NWA, WWF and several minor international promotions.
