TNA: Should Impact Consider Hiring the WWE Castoffs?
Could one company's loss be another company's fortune?
In terms of wrestling brands, it may be just what TNA needs in continuing to push the envelop in terms of competing with the WWE.
And in light of recent decisions by Spike TV to rebrand itself and change some of its format, gaining any momentum for TNA would be a good thing.
Impact has been riding a wave of success lately with its PPV events, Slammiversary and Destination X and is about to embark on another potential moneymaker in Hardcore Justice. But last night's television program was weak at a time where it should have blown the roof off the building.
Melina, Vladimir Kozlov, Chris Masters and D. H Smith were all released from their contracts with WWE. Gail Kim, a former Knockouts Champion in TNA, left the company of her own accord.
I am not naive enough to think these five wrestlers can change things in Florida. I am also not as green as to think all five of these competitors will be welcomed to TNA. But look at the state of TNA right now.
The veterans are still running the shows and brand
The Bound for Glory Series is great and has produced some amazing theater. But it also has left us a little confused. Scott Steiner has no business in the tournament and Samoa Joe is both winless and looks like it is part of a work. The favorite going in, Matt Morgan, is injured and AJ Styles is being distracted by his best friend during matches. Even Devon, who needs a new angle because the one with The Pope is old, is in the thick of things.
And the factions, Immortal and Fortune, are having their own differences.
The X-Division is taking shape but needs more
TNA just released Amazing Red. Austin Aires and Alex Shelley are going to battle with Brian Kendrick for the X-Division title. Kazarian should be more involved in this division as should Christopher Daniels and somehow, we need to get Jerry Lynn back on television.
The Knockouts are knocking each other out
Mickie James holds the title. Winter is challenging her for it this weekend. Angelina Love may want it once it is around her owner's waist. Miss Tessmacher and Tara are the tag champs and will feud with Rosita and Sarita again. ODB and Jackie are on the fence and then there is Velvet Sky who deserves a break (and no, not from television. We need more of her on the screen).
Oh, what some new talent would do to shake the pot a bit.
Gail Kim is a no-brainer. Bring her back. She can wrestle, and a feud with Winter for the Knockouts Title would be awesome.
Chris Masters would work if he came in, Goldberg-style and just crushed everyone.
I am not sold on Kozlov. He is a good competitor, but also looks stiff at times. Additionally, which side of the fence would he fit on?
DH Smith is the same thing in terms of how to use him.
Two out of four isn't bad. TNA has a habit of taking WWE talent and using it well (Jeff Hardy, Anderson, Bully Ray, Kurt Angle).
Maybe the loss for WWE can be a treasure for TNA.
And right now treasures don't need to be gold, but they do need to be worth something.
