O'Connell is a three-year veteran of the NFL. He was drafted by the New England Patriots in 2008; however, he was on the Dolphins' draft board as a possibility had Chad Henne been drafted before the Dolphins' second-round pick came up.

New England cut O'Connell after training camp in 2009. He then signed with the Detroit Lions, but was then traded to the New York Jets for a seventh-round pick only five days after signing with the team.

However, during the 2010 preseason, O'Connell suffered a torn labrum in his throwing arm that would require surgery. The Jets released him but then re-signed him—this time, to a two-year deal.

However, the Jets released O'Connell on July 29th of this year, which brings him to the Miami Dolphins.

O'Connell isn't expected to compete for the starting job; however, the Dolphins organization seems to like him, and has since he was in college.

O'Connell went to San Diego State University where he started 21 games. During his senior season, the dual-threat quarterback lead the Aztecs in rushing with 426 yards and 11 touchdowns along with 3,063 passing yards, 15 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

If O'Connell makes the final 53 don't be surprised if the Dolphins choose to use him for scouting his former teams the Pats and Jets, as well as in a role that the team had originally hoped that Pat White would fill.

But don't expect him to compete with Chad Henne for the starting job. Henne currently seems firmly entrenched as the Dolphins starting quarterback barring either a total meltdown on his part or an out-of-this-world preseason performance from Matt Moore or Pat Devlin.

To make room for O'Connell, the Dolphins waived quarterback Tom Brandstater, according to the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero's twitter feed.
