WWE Summerslam: 5 Most Disappointing Events in SummerSlam History

Justin WatryJun 7, 2018

With the biggest party of the summer just over a week away, I am going to begin my look at SummerSlam's past and its good/bad.

While many have fond memories of this fine event, some things happened to go down that...well, were not so much as BAD, but more like DISAPPOINTING!

With that said, I am going to take a look at five events or matches that had all the hype in the world, had a big feel around it, only to fall flat on its face.

Again...this is not for terrible moments, this is for most disappointing moments, which leads me into No. 5...

Cena/Nexus: 2010

1 of 5

I am actually in the minority here; I enjoyed the match. I also am a firm believer that Cena's team HAD to win here, just as they did. The reason this appears on the list is very simple—the match was not all that amazing and what I was all jazzed up for.

This thing was hyped to be the greatest 7-on-7 tag match ever!

Think about that...a 7-on-7 tag match headlined the second biggest show of the year! How amazing! I was hyped to the gills, and what we got was...a good match?!?!

Yeah, Bret Hart showed off some moves, Daniel Bryan returned, but this battle needed more, and we got it—just after the event was over.

RVD vs. Jeff Hardy: 2001

2 of 5

I know these two do not have the best reputation anymore, but 10 years ago, these two guys could still go. Their Invasion match a month earlier was great, and this month with a ladder added; most expected an even better contest.

What did we get? A botchfest. Spots just for spots. Little to no selling and one the crowd saw right through. Yeah, it is Jeff Hardy. Yeah, it is RVD.

Not the best known for selling and technical skills, but this was such a disappointment it was not even funny. As I mentioned, you could almost sense the crowd being let down by this as it went on...

Angle vs. Eddie: 2004

3 of 5

Everyone please watch that promo video! Again, this match had all the makings of a classic.

It was a rematch of their great, great, GREAT WrestleMania XX match. It had months of history. It had two of the best ever inside the ring. It had a clear-cut face and a clear-cut heel. The stage was set for SummerSlam from Canada.

The match came, and it went. Angle won, as most expected, but it just seemed "off" here. The two men had a near perfect match at WM XX, and here, they just went out there for 20 minutes and had a good match. These two are more capable of a "good match" folks.

After the match, I was very disappointed. This was one of the selling points for a pretty stacked SummerSlam card in 2004, and it just did not have "magic."

Sorry guys, just my opinion here...

Stone Cold/Undertaker: 1998

Madison Square Garden. New York City. SummerSlam. Austin vs. Taker. Could it get any bigger and better?

WWE had a great hype song in "Highway to Hell"; two great figures in the company's history were in the middle of the Monday Night Wars; fans were jacked!

The match between these two legends was...ugh! I am sorry again, but this thing never seemed to click. I do not know if it was the strange face/face/tweener (no heels involved) thing going on in the 90s, but it just did not do it for me. On an otherwise amazing SummerSlam event, this one stunk up the joint.

I am a huge Taker fan. I am a huge Stone Cold fan, but I do not think these two ever had a classic match between them. They have had multiple battles, but they were always either good, okay, or in this case, downright ugly.

...and now the granddaddy of SummerSlam disappointments is...

Bret Hart vs. Bulldog: 1992

5 of 5

Trust me. I saved you all a ton of time and energy by only posting the highlights and not the whole match. Trust me!.

Due to my age, I was not able to witness this one live. Full disclosure there—not gonna lie. Over the years of being on forums and going to columns and this and that, all I would ever hear/read is how amazing Bret Hart against Bulldog was back at SummerSlam 1992.

Man, people were telling me this was a "5-star" match, it was a classic, it was the greatest match they had ever seen. Wow! I was jacked up to finally see this thing; I couldn't wait!

Well, I watched the event in full, and the crowd was there. The action was there. The buzz was there (even years later, I was giddy to see this match). The match started, and it was a great match...then it ended.

Yeah, it was a great match. I am not going to bury this thing, but the title of this article is about being disappointed, and boy was I?

It was a great match...a great match. Not the greatest ever. Not a flawless encounter. Not a match for the ages.

Nothing like that at all...just a great match...
