Will Carlos Cabrera and Hugo Savinovich Ever Be Inducted into WWE's HOF?
Before addressing the question which hovers above, what follows should be asked: do you have the slightest fragment of decency and memory (because it’s all a matter of memory) to correctly identify both names mentioned?
For those who are not aware of it, Carlos Cabrera and Hugo Savinovich are members of WWE’s Spanish announcing team. If you’re still having trouble identifying them, they are the guys whose table is smashed in constant (or is it mandatory?) fashion. Ring a bell now?
If it still does not, that means you don’t care at all, which worries me, and my concern has led to the formulation of the title inquiry.
Both men have been calling the action behind the table/spot-target for around 15 years. While Good Ol’ JR, Jerry Lawlel, Michael Cole, Booker T and Josh Mathews have the benefit of brand assignation, Carlos and Hugo have called the action on both brands, second-rate programs and every WWE PPV all by their own since day one (with the occasional help of Marcelo Rodriguez lately).
Carlos Cabrera is a former journalist with a deep voice and exquisite narrative capabilities even when action is fast-paced. Hugo Savinovich conveys his expertise on the industry (which he entered at age 14 and has experienced as a competitor and manager) with great success. In addition, both translate backstage segments and promos on the spot. Anyone who has been on a rush to translate anything right at the moment someone’s speaking knows how difficult it is. Carlos and Hugo do a very good job nonetheless. To make things even better, the pair has powerful chemistry, and an energetic, fun style with the headset.
Like any other member of WWE’s crew, they endure the road and life of anyone linked to the wrestling business. They make sacrifices and work hard. Now pile onto that being a target of most wrestlers looking for a pop through table-related spots. The Spanish announcer table has been demolished countless times; Mick Foley might remember landing on it after The Undertaker threw him off the cell. Hugo has taken part on match spots through chair shots directed to his head. In most PPV’s both are in constant peril of being squashed by 240-plus lbs muscle freaks and/or suffering injuries while trying to avoid sharp ends of their table.
Most important of all, Carlos and Hugo are the primal link between WWE and their Hispanic fans.
What I’m trying to say is that these guys deserve as much praise as Hall of Fame commentators like Jim Ross, Gordon Solie and Jerry Lawler, even if English-speaking audiences might not care at all and run silent through what would be their well deserved Hall of Fame moment.
Of course, Carlos and Hugo have several years left behind the table. Time will tell if WWE realizes what should be done and inducts their Spanish announce team into the WWE Hall of Fame.
