The Kid, the 'Cane, and the Old Timer Pick Week 10

Ryan HallamNov 8, 2008

Once again, the man in first going into the week had another poor showing. This time it was yours truly, The Kid, who had a slim handle on the lead before blowing it with a .500 record in Week Nine. The highlights include picking WITH Brad Johnson, Brooks Bollinger, and the Cowboys (dumb!), picking with the Rams and their defense against the explosive Cardinals (stupid!), and not picking with the Bengals (ok, that made sense but didn’t work out).

The Hero of the Week goes to Scott “The Hurricane” Hallam who had a great week at 10-4 and now assumes the coveted, yet dreaded position, of leading this competition. The Raiders and Cowboys were his worst picks, but overall a big hearty slap on the back for our new leader.

The Old Timer slipped further away from the Boys as he had another crummy week at 6-8. However, when sending his picks in for the week he left this note for his fans:

“I’ve Just Given The Boys A Head Start Out Of The Box, But Its Time For The O.T. To Dominate.”

Let’s get to the picks, but first the current standings through Week Nine:

The ‘Cane: 54-54-5
The Kid: 53-55-5
The O.T.: 48-60-5

And now, Week 10:

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES -3 vs. New York Giants

The ‘Cane says: Philly.
The Kid says: Eagles. I like the Giants, but don’t think they are as good as they have been playing. Look for the Philly defense to really mix things up and find a way to disrupt all this time Eli Manning has had to throw the ball.
The Old Timer says: Phils. At Home Cover/Upset Special

NEW YORK JETS -9 vs. St. Louis Rams
The ‘Cane says: Rams.
The Kid says: Jets.  I can’t believe I am giving so many points with the Jets, I don’t think they should be more than a TD fave over anyone. But something is telling me that this is the week that they come out and put a stompin' on someone. Without Stephen Jackson, it could be the Rams.
The Old Timer says: Rams. Jets aren’t good enough to give nine points to anyone.

Jacksonville Jaguars -6.5 at DETROIT LIONS
The ‘Cane says: Jags.
The Kid says: Lions. Let’s see if I have this right. The Jags just lost to a team that hadn’t won a game all season long and now they are favored on the road against another team who hasn’t won a game by nearly a touchdown? Doesn’t add up to me.  Will both of the Defeateds beat the Jags? Not sure, but I think the Lions will cover the number.
The Old Timer says: Lions.

Tennessee Titans -3 at CHICAGO BEARS
The ‘Cane says: Titans.
The Kid says: Titans. Ok, so they didn’t cover the spread last week, but the Titans still won. I will bet them against a team that will be led by Rex “The Human Turnover Machine” Grossman, even on the road.
The Old Timer says: Bears. No more undefeateds (editor’s note: This is coming from a Dolphins fan).

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS -3.5 vs. Buffalo Bills
The ‘Cane says: Bullys.
The Kid says: Patriots. I made the mistake of picking against the Pats last week, won’t make that same mistake again. Cassel is starting to look more and more comfortable.
The Old Timer says: Pats. Belicheck has Cassel rolling.

ATLANTA FALCONS -1 New Orleans Saints
The ‘Cane says: Falcons.
The Kid says: Saints.  I just love their offense and the Falcons' D is nothing to write home about. Look for Brees to have a field day against the Falcons' secondary.
The Old Timer says: SAINTS +1. I Hope The GOOD Saints Show Up

MIAMI DOLPHINS -8.5 vs. Seattle Seahawks
The ‘Cane says: Dolphins.
The Kid says:
Although I don’t think the Dolphins should be favored by more than a touchdown against some college teams, I am going to take them anyway. One of those games that seems so obvious, so you go the other way. No, not go the other way like that you pig! Not that there’s anything wrong with that!
The Old Timer says:
SEAHAWKS. MIAMI Can’t Beat A Lousy Team, they are only beating the quality ones.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS -2.5 vs. Green Bay Packers
The ‘Cane says: Minny.
The Kid says: Vikes.  In this red-hot rivalry, I almost always take the home team. I actually like the Packers more as a complete team, but I think AP will go off and the Vikings will find a way to win.
The Old Timer says: Packers and the points for the pick of the week.

Carolina Panthers -9.5 at OAKLAND RAIDERS
The ‘Cane says: Panthers.
The Kid says: Panthers. This is a huge number for a road favorite but the Raiders are such a mess I will lay it. Now, even unimpressive JaMarcus Russell is out and that puts the offense in the incapable hands of Andrew Walter. The Panther defenders must be salivating.
The Old Timer says: Raiders.

SAN DIEGO CHARGERS -15 vs. Kansas City Chiefs
The ‘Cane says: Chefs.
The Kid says: Chiefs. The Chargers haven’t shown enough consistency to be favored by over two touchdowns against anyone in my opinion. Tyler Thigpen has shown some improvement, and Jamaal Charles looked pretty decent in his appearance last week. I am quite sure the Chargers will win, but I am looking at a 10-point victory.
The Old Timer says: Chargers. Chiefs away from home couldn’t beat Oprah

PITTSBURGH STEELERS -3 Indianapolis Colts
The ‘Cane says: Pittsburgh.
The Kid says: Colts. If Big Ben was definitely playing, I’d probably have taken the Steelers, but with Leftwich in there, I’ll take Peyton and the Colts.
The Old Timer says: Colts. I keep betting MANNING & he keeps costing me

HOUSTON TEXANS E vs. Baltimore Ravens
The ‘Cane says: Baltimore.
The Kid says: Ravens. This is the other AFC team that has no offense that I pick every week. Their defense is just so physical I expect Sage Rosenfels to have a hard time keeping his composure. And with Joe Flacco showing some maturity, look for the Ravens to get this one on the road.
The Old Timer says: Ravens. BLOODBATH

ARIZONA CARDINALS -9.5 vs. San Francisco 49ers
The ‘Cane says: Arizona.

The Kid says: Cardinals. Oh, my beloved Niners. How much do I love thee? Forget that, let me count the ways that you frustrate me every Sunday. Their defense has been horrible and Kurt Warner has been gashing defenses all season long. Not a recipe for success.

The Old Timer says: Niners. New Q.B. New Result
