Tim Tebow Should Be Traded Before Kyle Orton

Eric BallJun 7, 2018

What a difference 10 days can make.

Last week, as training camp was opening and hope sprung eternal, Broncos nation was oozing with anticipation for their QB—Tim Tebow—to show off all of the hard work he put in during the offseason and blow away the coaching staff. New head coach John Fox would need to see one practice before shipping off Kyle Orton to Miami and allowing the Tebow Era to officially begin.

Instead...it's been the exact opposite.

Orton looks like the same steady, veteran QB he has always been while Tebow looks like anything but. His accuracy has been awful and his mechanics leave a lot to be desired. Just making a simple five-step drop is a struggle at this point.

Did Tebow let his celebrity get the best of him this offseason? Did the underwear and energy drink endorsements, in addition to the book tour take up too much time? Did he lose some of his passion to be the best once the dollar signs began pouring in?

It's getting ugly in Denver and the city is not big enough for the both of them. If the organization ignores the rabid Tebow section of their fan base will the attendance get effected? That's all secondary to fielding a competitive team and from the sounds of WR Brandon Llyod's comments, the players have made their decision on who should start:

"Keeping Orton as the starter means we're trying to win now. Going with Tim Tebow is a developmental move. That's not a 'now' move. Would that (tick) me off? Yeah, it would. But at the same time I'm a competitor so I'm going to try to make it work"

If Orton starts this season and puts up another so-so record  with the crowd consistently chanting for his backup, is that a good thing? Then, with the team going nowhere, Tebow shows mixed results in the last five meaningless games...what was the point? (via Denver Post)

Somebody has to go, and why shouldn't it be Tebow?

He wasn't drafted by new coach John Fox and has no real connection to him. If his issues are as glaring as everyone is saying right now—why not sell him high while the value is still there.

Miami is willing to toss a second round pick at Orton—Denver surely could wiggle a first round pick out of Tebow. Factor in the incredible presence Tebow has in Florida, and the Dolphins find their franchise guy that has a great O-Line and D around him.

Orton can keep the Broncos competitive and avoid a team mutiny while kicking Tebow nation to the curb. It's not going to sit well with all their fans, but it's the only way to avoid what is increasingly an explosive situation that will only get worse.
