TNA: If a Divas Battle Royal Can Work for WWE, Why Can't It Work for Impact?

David LevinJun 7, 2018

The old adage goes, "If you aren’t cheating, you aren’t trying." Well, it may not be cheating, but it is duplicating something that could be a real boost for TNA and its Knockouts Division.

Monday evening, Raw held a “Diva’s Battle Royal” with the winner earning the right to face Kelly Kelly at Summer Slam.  Forget about the image of Beth Phoenix, winner of the match, turning on Kelly Kelly and the lead-up it created toward the PPV. Forget about the fact there wasn’t much wrestling in the match (there never is in one of these style events) or the fact that a match like this will not draw much next Sunday.

Look at the bigger picture—for TNA that is.

A Knockout’s “Battle Royal” or Bound for Glory Series type of angle is just what this division needs.

Besides the idea of seeing these women more on television (which is never a bad thing), it will add more credibility to the division and prove how important the women of TNA are to the brand. I would go as far as to say the Knockout’s Champion is more important now to Impact than Eric Young and the Television Championship.

And I do not think I am stretching it when I say that.

If you look at the women’s roster, there are 11-12 women who are legitimately deserving a shot at the women’s title and that includes current champion Mickie James. And with a few more women added to the mix, (Roxy LaRoux, Lacey Von Erich, Daffney, Gail Kim, and Melina) you have a great chance for a wonderful tournament.

The women’s division has been a constant for TNA the past three months with turnover and turmoil in TNA over the stables, BFG, and X-Division. Recently, the writers have missed the mark and need to refocus on these ladies.

Is this possible? Is it doable? Should it be done? All three questions deserve a resounding YES! Seeing James put her title on the line at BFG after a tournament has been played out is pure genius and it allows us to see more women on television, which is good for ratings. It also means feuds like Winter vs. Angelina Love or Rosita vs. Sarita could happen.

Ah, the thought just makes me smile.

It also has the potential to give Velvet Sky the title run she deserves. But it is a soap opera, remember, so it probably will not happen.

If creative can see what a true gold mine it would hit with the Bound for Glory series and can translate that to women’s success, it can only mean more momentum and bigger ratings.

It can also help with the potential rebrand by Spike TV that is expected to happen in the near future. Vince Russo, Eric Bischoff and the writing staff are keenly aware of how much attention they get from the Knockouts Division. When the women are on the screen for a good 20 minutes, like they were two weeks ago, all it can do is foster even more success—And a hope that TNA is still moving in the right direction.
