UFC 133 Fight Card: What Must Vitor Belfort Do to Beat Yoshihiro Akiyama?
Looking to reemerge among the rankings of the middleweight division, Vitor Belfort steps back into the Octagon to take on Judo specialist Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 133.
Both competitors bring their own set of skills that should make this matchup one of the more compelling bouts on the main card.
Belfort's strength is no secret, with his lighting-quick hand speed and striking combinations, his intention is to look for the finish as soon as the opportunity presents itself.
Akiyama is a well-rounded fighter who also likes to stand and trade; however, he is more efficient in close range and grappling with his opponent.
When Belfort meets Akiyama, it is likely he'll want to keep the fight on the feet.
Belfort should be aware of his opponent's renowned Judo background and not try to close distance or clinch with the Japanese star, as he'll be prevented from utilizing his striking.
The Brazilian should look to force Akiyama to commit to striking by opening him up with jabs while maintaining distance and looking to use his jab and leg kicks effectively. At the same time, Belfort should look to find openings while finding his range and throwing strikes.
Perhaps the only time Belfort should close distance with Akiyama is when he throws a combination or is on the counterattack. Akiyama has been known to show poor cardio in his recent fights—something Belfort should take advantage of if both men engage on the feet.
If Belfort can remain patient without getting too close into his opponent's range, it is more than likely that he will catch Akiyama.
Belfort is a faster, more technical striker and his power and hand-speed should overwhelm Akiyama to secure the knockout victory.
