Juan Ignacio Chela Reigns, Fabio Fognini Falls for Bet-at-Home Cup Quarterfinals
On Wednesday, first seed Juan Ignacio Chela was pushed to three sets by Spanish player Daniel Gimeno-Traver in a match that lasted two hours, 14 minutes in Kitzbuhel, Austria.
The Argentine won 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, despite the World No. 80 having stronger statistics in the serving department. Gimeno-Traver hit eight aces, one double fault and won 70 percent of first-serve points while the victor had two aces, five double faults and won 67 percent of first-serve points.
In the end, Chela improved his record on clay to 21-11 in 2011 and won 91 total points. He will face the winner of Marcel Granollers vs qualifier Antonio Veic in the quarterfinals.
Colombian Santiago Giraldo upset fourth-seeded Fabio Fognini 6-3, 6-4 on the clay of the Bet-At-Home Cup by 12 more total points in the match.
The World No. 62 is now 23-19 this year, converting five of nine break point opportunities from 62nd ranked Fognini.
Giraldo faces either fifth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber or Albert Montanes in the quarterfinals.
Sixth seed Andrea Seppi excused another Spaniard, Pere Riba, 7-5, 6-4.
The Italian shot out five aces and won 40 of 69 total service points. He could play Robin Haase or second seed Feliciano Lopez.
