The 14 Biggest Press Conference Blowups in NFL History

Matt SteinJun 7, 2018

Having reporters yelling questions at you right after a difficult loss cannot be an easy thing to handle. While NFL coaches and players handle press conferences extremely well the majority of the time, every once and a while we witness an absolute blowup.

All it takes is one ridiculous question to set off a string of events that will certainly be regretted down the road. Coaches have lost their jobs and players have ruined their careers in these brief moments of mental weakness.

With great lines such as, "Playoffs? Are you kidding me?" and "You play to win the game", here are the 14 biggest press conference blowups in NFL history.

14. Ryan Leaf

1 of 14

Technically this wasn't a press conference, but it was too good to leave out which is why Ryan Leaf gets the last spot on this list.

As one of the biggest busts in NFL history, the fact that Leaf has the gonads to speak like that to any NFL player is laughable. Had Leaf spoken this frankly to a member of the media during a press conference, this blowup would have been much higher on the list.

13. Jim Fassel

2 of 14

Considering the fact that Jim Fassel correctly predicted that his team would make the playoffs makes me never want to play poker with him.

While at first glance this might not seem like much of a blowup, Fassel was clearly pushed over the edge. How else can you explain him making such an outrageous claim?

The way I see it is that Fassel is like a silent killer. He doesn't yell when he gets angry as much as he calmly tells you exactly what he is going to do to you to make you feel the most pain.

12. Bill Belichick

3 of 14

Has anyone ever seen Bill Belichick make a different facial expression than the one you see above?

Once again, you might not consider this a blowup until you realize two things. First, stats aren't really for losers. Everyone cares about stats. You know what is for losers, hooded sweatshirts.

Secondly, of course the final score is for winners. Could you say anything more obvious Belichick?

When you state the overly obvious and make up some ridiculous thing such as stats are for losers, you just internally blew up. We might not see it on the outside yet, but we know what is really going on inside.

11. Jerry Burns

4 of 14

If you have sensitive ears or children around, please refrain from playing the video above.

Jerry Burns is an old school coach who blows-up like the rest of us do, with good old fashioned cussing. The great thing about this is that the Minnesota Vikings actually won the game.

Imagine what the press conferences were like after the Vikings lost.

10. Bill Callahan

5 of 14

You aren't going to keep your job for very long when you call your team the dumbest team in America. Even a first-grader is smart enough to realize that.

After leading the Raiders to the Super Bowl in his first season, Callahan and the Raiders followed that up with a 4-12 season. His players were very verbal about how bad of a job Callahan was doing and even went as far as to say he was purposely sabotaging the season.

I guess Callahan considered calling his players stupid the perfect kind of payback.

9. Jim Zorn

6 of 14

Remind me to never roll my eyes if I ever meet Jim Zorn.

If a simple thing like rolling the eyes could set Zorn off that bad, I don't even want to know what would happen to the reporter that slowly shook their head at Zorn's comments.

Having someone ask you a stupid question is a good reason to blowup. However, you probably need anger management if a simple eye roll ticks you off.

8. Mike Ditka

7 of 14

If the reporters were asking Mike Ditka crazy questions, I could see why he would be getting a little testy. The problem is that all the questions were pretty legitimate.

Of course the media wants to know about who is starting at quarterback and what is going on with injuries. It wasn't necessary for Ditka to get all angry about those quality questions.

Then some idiot had to go and ask why Ditka was in a bad mood. Hey reporter, do you ask a monkey why he flings feces? Of course not, it is just his nature just like Mike Ditka's nature is being in a bad mood.

7. Keyshawn Johnson

8 of 14

The first 10 seconds of the video above shows Keyshawn Johnson.

In those 10 seconds I heard seven beeps. That is nearly a beep a second and definitely worthy of the seventh spot on this list.

6. Mike Singletary

9 of 14

I really liked Mike Singletary as a coach and it is unfortunate that he is no longer a head coach.

This is one of the few blow-ups that makes a really good point. I'm not sure if saying that one of your best players doesn't want to win was a good choice, but I still agree with everything he said.

After listening to this, I ditched all my loser friends and am currently looking for only winners. Are there any winners out there?

5. Jim Mora I

10 of 14

This is the first of two Jim Mora blow-ups to make this list.

The point that Mora is trying to make is a little difficult after he uses the word diddly-poo, but let me try and break it down for you.

First, they got beat really bad. Second, everyone sucks.

4. Derek Anderson

11 of 14

Derek Anderson had a very difficult season last year. He was caught laughing on the sidelines while his team was getting destroyed. Anderson clearly saw his actions in a different way.

I wonder if this blowup was more embarrassing than being benched in favor of Max Hall and John Skelton? I doubt it.

3. Herm Edwards

12 of 14

After watching this blowup, I now realize why I was always so poor in sports. I never realized that the point of playing the game was to win.

Here I was thinking all those years that the purpose of playing football or basketball was to lose. Thank you Herman Edwards for clearing so much up for me. I will no longer be the laughing-stock of my recreational croquet team.

2. Jim Mora II

13 of 14

Does Jim Mora ever think that his team played a good game? I mean, I know it is good to always think you can do better, but Mora takes it to a whole new level.

Is it really that hard to fathom that your team could make the playoffs Jim? Really, are you kidding me?

1. Dennis Green

14 of 14

Wow. It would be safe to call this an overreaction on the part of Dennis Green.

I guess when you give up a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter, it can make you kind of angry. All I want to know is who the Arizona Cardinals thought the Chicago Bears were?

Were they simply a NFL football team or were they all the sons of Zeus sent for the sole purpose of winning against Arizona?
