NFL Free Agency: 6 Teams Who've Yet to Make a Move but Will

Darin PikeJun 7, 2018

While many teams have been very active in free agency to round out their rosters, some have been on the sidelines waiting to see what talent will slip and be available cheap.

While this may be a necessity for teams feeling the cap crunch, there are a few others that have ample room to spare and are still yet to make much of a splash.

These teams could be waiting until a few franchises need to make tough decisions with player personnel to get below $121 million by Friday.  Some of the teams currently over the salary cap could be looking to trade players for draft picks, paying dividends to the teams that were patient.

New York Giants: Osi Umenyiora, DE

1 of 5

The Giants have a problem on their hands that most NFL teams would love to have.  They have four starting-caliber defensive ends on their team.

They also have a problem most coaches wouldn't want to inherit.  One of their stars is just a tad disgruntled with ownership.

Osi Umenyiora feels he was promised a new deal or to be traded to a team that would renegotiate his contract.  He was given authority to look for a trading partner willing to give up a first-round pick for his services.

Despite rumors to the contrary, the Giants never lowered their asking price of a first-round pick.

Umenyiora's agent, Tony Agnone, confirmed there were five teams interested in acquiring the talented pass-rusher.  However, none of them were willing to part with a first-round pick in the 2012 NFL draft.

Teams reportedly having the most interest were St. Louis, Seattle, San Diego, Baltimore and Denver.

Umenyiora was fuming mad when he received the news, and he refused to practice.  The Giants' general manager, Jerry Reese, gave him the day to go home and clear his head.  Umenyiora opted to stay and watch practice.

This situation will continue to be volatile until the Giants either sign Umenyiora to a new contract or trade him.  They are in need of a tight end, as salary constraints are keeping them from re-signing Kevin Boss.  Perhaps a trade involving Seattle's John Carlson and a second- or third-round draft pick would suffice.

Oakland Raiders: Chris Johnson, CB

The Raiders need to trim $12 million in salary and still need a tight end.  This will be a difficult prospect for the Raiders, as they don't have much depth to work with.

One area where a cut can be made is cornerback.  If the Raiders can drum up some interest in Chris Johnson, they would be wise to move him and his $3 million salary.

Potential markets for Johnson would include San Francisco and Indianapolis, which has yet to re-sign or replace Kelvin Hayden.

Houston Texans: Steve Slaton, RB

The Texans have $8.5 million to trim in salary.  Steve Slaton is part of a crowded backup/complement crew to Arian Foster, making him expendable.

There are several teams that could use an upgrade at the complementary runner spot.

Slaton can likely be had for a sixth-round draft pick.  The Baltimore Ravens could be looking for some options in their backfield.

Detroit Lions: Corey Williams, DT

The Lions are sitting on a lot of new talent, but must clear $8 million of payroll.  The recent injury to rookie Nick Fairley will make it a little more difficult to trim on the defensive line, but that is where they are deepest.

Corey Williams is scheduled to make $5 million in 2011.  Moving the productive defensive tackle would put a huge dent in the Lions' salary cap issue.  The St. Louis Rams and the Denver Broncos have both looked at defensive line help this offseason.

Moving back to a 4-3 helped Williams' pass rush effectiveness.  The Rams or Broncos would be ideal fits for him.

Pittsburgh Steelers: Larry Foote, LB

The San Francisco 49ers have been tough for their fans to follow.  While other teams in the division are making trades and signing marquee players, the 49ers seem to think the revolving door for talent is merely a pretty exit.

The 49ers need to upgrade their secondary, sign a defensive tackle and find at least two linebackers just to stay on par with their defense last season.

Enter the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are $8 million over the salary cap and are paying a backup linebacker $2.4 million in 2011.  While he does provide insurance as a high-quality backup, the Steelers need to shed money by Friday.
