WWE: Is Turning Sheamus Face a Smart Move, or Should He Remain a Heel?
For the second time in two and a half weeks, fellow Bleacher Report writer Jacob Waring and I got into a debate via Twitter.
This time, it was over Sheamus' face turn, and whether he is better suited to be a face or a heel.
You see, the past couple weeks on SmackDown, "The Celtic Warrior" has been inching ever so closely to a face turn, even slapping Mark Henry and challenging him to fight.

Most Likely Backlash Heel/Face Turns 🎭
Without further delay, let's get this debate started!

Since debuting in late 2009, Sheamus has been a heel. He has feuded with John Cena, Randy Orton, Triple H and a host of others.
He began as a monster, and transitioned into a cowardly heel, which made absolutely no sense in my mind.
I believe a face turn will give Sheamus a fresh crop of feuds and hopefully he will not back down from a fight.
Jacob Waring
Made no sense? NO SENSE? How is he a face when all he did was really wrestle a few heels and got in Mark Henry's face. There was no rhythm or fluid logic with the face turn. Besides he is better as a heel than a smiling face as tearing apart Jamie Noble was just art!
Besides, Ryan, he tore apart jobbers and low-carders while winning the WWE Title by a fluke. The transition to cowardly heel made sense, more sense than just randomly making him a face.
Ryan Frye
The fans turned him face, and it can't turn out much worse than it did with Randy Orton, now can it?
Orton is boring and bland as a face, unlike Sheamus who has a likable quality to him.
To say Sheamus fits the cowardly heel mold is like saying The Miz would make a good monster heel. He is an imposing, physical wrestler, and has the potential of a Batista-like face, who was better than given credit for.
Also, SmackDown was in desperate need of another main event face, as Christian is going to need an opponent soon.
Jacob Waring
Orton is hampered by his gimmick of being a ruthless, emotionless, ass-kicking RKO-ing machine. Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator was boring but he had a colorful supporting cast which Orton does not.
Besides, fans turning Orton face shows that wrestling fans are stupid enough to want to turn someone just to like or hate them when their current face/heel status is working for them.
Fans get what they want with Sheamus turning face but he may end up being a smiling goof instead of an aggressive monster.
The ass clowns called the WWE creative team simply back themselves in a stinker of a spot by having the entire roster of the WWE more heel-heavy than face. They also took out Kane and Big Show out to make Mark Henry strong.
Sheamus won't make a good face because it was not a natural process. Take Christian, for example, as we knew he can be a good heel but his heel turn was weak. Sadly Sheamus’ face turn is weaker.
Ryan Frye
Sheamus does need to keep an edge to himself, and he surely should stay as far away from Hornswaggle as possible.
With that being said, Sheamus has much more personality than Randy Orton, as do 90 percent of humans on the planet. So I truly believe the turn will work.
Besides, Sheamus was not a monster anymore, he was a coward.
It doesn't really matter how methodically it was done, as long as he can get over, which seems to already be the case.
Creative has booked themselves into somewhat of a corner, but they cannot be blamed for everything. Let's just see what Sheamus can do as a face before we call this a bad move.
Jacob Waring
Ryan, leave your unhealthy obsession of hating on Orton out of it as it’s his freaking gimmick that forces him to be void of personality, not himself. Back in 2004 he had more personality than the pimple you popped this morning.
Sheamus can be a good face but the ineffective face turn will hamper him and it’ll be a flop. R-Truth was a face the crowd loved but thanks to a well-planned thought-out angle he’s not very hated. Sheamus will just end up with neutral boos and cheers.
Monsters can be cowards. Freddy Kruger only killed in dreams, in the real world he'd be easily killed. Vampires are bad asses when they don’t sparkle or fear the dark. Sheamus is a cowardly monster which is a nice change from the usual variety of dominating big men we've all seen countless times.
Hornswaggle needs to just choke on lucky charms as everyone is sick of him by this point except for the kiddies!
Ryan Frye
Getting a bit defensive about Orton, aren't you?
Anyway, that debate is for another time, let's focus on Sheamus.
The face turn was obviously not ineffective, because he got a monster pop on SmackDown last week, when he had just turned the week prior.
A cowardly monster?
Doesn't that defeat the purpose? A monster should be a fearless and destructive force.
I think it's better he turn face than get buried on SmackDown among all the other heels, and be de-monsterized more than he was when he went screaming for John Cena.
Jacob Waring
The thing about Smackdown is that it’s taped, so the pops could have been fake. Crowd noise has become manufactured enough to make it sound real. So that made your so-called “pop” a moot point.
A monster does not necessarily mean a fearless and destructive force. The 1943 version of The Wolfman showed the Wolfman as a troubled soul. Frankenstein was a misunderstood monster who was a fearless and destructive force, but more like a child.
So having a cowardly monster heel simply spices up the programming. Not all monsters are the same, Ry-Ry!
He’ll get buried regardless. He’s just being made face because the WWE creative team is desperate and it’ll backfire on them. Hell, he may end up joining Kane and Big Show as Henry’s next victim.
I would have not qualms with Sheamus' face turn if it was logical, fluid and timed right. It was not any of those things, but a jumble of a pathetic mess.
Ryan Frye
I'm not going to assume the "WWE is piping in crowd reaction," as some on SmackDown don't get any reaction at all. I just don't buy that theory.
You are really going back to 1943?
Well, this is 2011 and in professional wrestling, a cowardly monster just isn't logical.
Sheamus' face turn was done by the fans, and we are always begging the WWE to listen to us. Honestly, it's a bit hypocritical that you backtrack on such pleas now.
As long as he isn't treated as a joke, like Finlay was as a face, Sheamus can work out well with his fresh character.
Why don't we just allow something to play out before we jump all over it?
Jacob Waring
Regardless of whether piping in crowd reaction is a myth or not, it’s foolish to not consider the possibility Ry-Ry.
Yeah, I went to 1943 as referencing the 2010 remake would have further proved my point but remakes are never good as the original so I stuck with the 1943.
Your stance on the debate isn’t logical, as a cowardly monster is a character that is rarely seen in pro-wrestling and that is a refreshing concept to witness.
If fans want Sheamus to have a sex change and change his theme music to Lady Gaga’s “Teeth”, would the the WWE listen to the fans then?
NO! The reason is that the fans are not always right. As for being smart, they are all pretty dumb. They wanted Orton to be a face and look how that failed miserably!
For the record, I never got on my knees and begged the WWE to do something. I have standards. As a fan I watch and enjoy the product and don't imagine myself as the boss. I'm not a delusional freak who thinks I know more than the men and women who run the WWE.
Finlay was a stereotype that worked as he was a drunk fighting Irish. Sheamus was lucky he has a gimmick in mind where he would not fall under that stereotypical banner.
I ain’t jumping on nothing as I have an opinion and I call it as it is. Fans who jump on it go way farther than I am, which is something you seem to not fully understand Ry-Ry.
Conclusion
This debate must end at some point, although I could keep on going.
Nonetheless, Jacob got the last word in this time, but I still believe I am right.
What is your opinion?
Is Sheamus better fit to be a face or a heel?
Your feedback is encouraged!
