WWE: 10 Superstars Who Should Follow Colt Cabana Back to WWE

Robert AitkenMay 31, 2018

At yesterday's tapings for Smackdown, Colt Cabana wrestled a dark match in a losing effort to Wade Barrett. It was Cabana's first match with WWE since his release in February 2009. There is no word yet on whether he wrestled the match as Scotty Goldman, his ring name in his first WWE run, or as Colt Cabana, his normal ring name in the independents.

Cabana has had his name come up in recent weeks with CM Punk's shoot promos, so it only seemed like a matter of time before this happened. This doesn't exactly mean that Cabana is signed back to WWE, but rather that Cabana is officially back on the radar of the company. Cabana seems on his way back to the WWE roster, which satisfy the fans who follow Cabana.

There are other stars deserving on WWE contracts that didn't work out in the long run. Whether they were disgruntled stars who asked for their releases or short-term employees that didn't make the cut, all of the members of this list were once employed by WWE and, with their success elsewhere, deserve another chance with WWE.

10) Kenny Dykstra

1 of 10

Dysktra was very young when he debuted in WWE as a member of Spirit Squad. Kenny emerged as the star of the group, who also included a man from a season of Tough Enough and a man who would later be known as Dolph Ziggler. Kenny would branch off on his own after Spirit Squad split up. Dykstra would stick around on the main roster by himself for a little while.

Dykstra was very young during his first run with WWE. Now still young at 25, Dykstra has been on the wrestling scene for ten years now, wrestling in independent promotions like Evolve and Dragon Gate USA. Dykstra, whose real name is Ken Doane, wrestled a try-out match for TNA in March 2010, but stated that he turned down another try-out match for TNA later that year.

9) Muhammad Nassan

2 of 10

In the years following his departure from the company, fans have called for and waited for the return of Muhammad Hassan. Hassan was able to captivate audiences with his Arab-American character. It put the typical heel foreigner stereotype on its side becuause Hassan admitted to being an American citizen and craved to be treated as an equal.

After controversial real-life terrorism was coincidentally too similar to some of Hassan's acts in his feud with The Undertaker, the networks refused to show him, forcing WWE's hand to release him. Almost five years after his release from WWE, Hassan appeared at an independent show in April 2010, the first time that Muhammad Hassan has appeared in a wrestling ring since September 2005. Turning 30 this November, Hassan (real name Mark Copani) could probably still hang around with some that WWE has to offer.

8) Kizarny

3 of 10

I happened to like Kizarny, even if others may not have. Kizarny, whose real name is Nick Cvjetkovich, has always had a gimmick similar to a crazy looking "carny", or a regular at a carnival. This continued in WWE, when Kizarny debuted with vignettes in late 2008. Kizarny spoke in carny talk, meaning an "iz" was thrown into most words.

Kizarny finally debuted in matches on Jan. 2, 2009. Not even 10 weeks would pass before Kizarny was released from his contract. Since then, Kizarny has wrestled the independents as Sinn Bodhi. Among the promotions Bodhi has wrestled in recently are Pro Wrestling Guerrilla and Chikara.

7) Brian Kendrick

4 of 10

Brian Kendrick always had something special to fans of WWE. Known as Spanky, Brian Kendrick and The Brian Kendrick over the years and his two stints in the company, Kendrick grew more and more fans with his unique in-ring ability, sticking him out from the rest of the cruiserweights in WWE. As The Brian Kendrick, a push toward the WWE Championship even happened, having him as the temporary champion in a Championship Scramble match.

It has been a few days more than two years that Kendrick has been released from his WWE contract. In that time, Kendrick has been in a bunch of promotions, including Dragon Gate USA, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, and wrestled for New Japan Pro Wrestling in June. Kendrick is mostly wrestling for TNA these days, becoming the X-Division Champion at Destination X. If Kendrick ever went back to WWE, it would give me one less reason to watch TNA, considering that I don't have that many reasons to begin with.

6) Shad Gaspard

5 of 10

Shad Gaspard entertained us as one half of Cryme Tyme for nearly five years. The pair never won any tag team gold, but Shad seemed to be on his way to breaking out when he turned on JTG after WrestleMania last year. After a short feud with him, Shad and his new attitude beat a few jobbers on Smackdown before disappearing back to the developmentals. Months later, in November 2010, Shad was released from his contract.

Shad is only 30 and is dabbling in a few different areas. Shad is rumored to be interested in doing mixed martial arts, while he signed a contract in a Japanese promotion in February. He also has apparently been involved in the filming of the upcoming G.I. Joe film.

5) Mickie James

6 of 10

A six-time champion in WWE, Mickie James was one of the best Divas in WWE in the last decade. Her release shocked many WWE fans when it happened in April 2010. Many thought it was to focus on her music career, but James would pop up on TNA, where she called home in 2003, when she signed a contract in September 2010.

Mickie has strengthened the Knockouts Division in TNA, arguably making it stronger than it has ever been. With WWE's Divas Division being as weak as it has been. If WWE could ever lure Mickie back to WWE, not only would it help WWE in the short-term, but could guarantee a Hall of Fame bid for James when she chooses to retire, should she want that.

4) MVP

7 of 10

Nobody was quite sure what to think of MVP when he debuted in WWE in 2006. By the end of 2010, fans loved him and were shocked to see him request his own release. MVP was a two-time United States Champion and seemed on the cusp of a decent main event push, only to seemingly be pushed further away from it.

As said before, MVP asked for his own release, meaning a return to WWE would be difficult. He is also 37 years old and is now a champion in New Japan Pro Wrestling, so time seems to be ticking for the chances of MVP returning.

3) Matt Morgan

8 of 10

Matt Morgan can easily be considered one of the Tough Enough superstars that WWE screwed up on. Morgan looked like he had all the potential in the world before a lack of chances and a lack of a good gimmick sent Morgan packing and off to TNA.

Now 34, Morgan still is not a world champion in TNA, despite many pushes in that direction. Morgan seems very anti-WWE, but if TNA won't give him the chance, WWE could swoop in with a contract and give him the world title reign that we all know he deserves.

2) Shelton Benjamin

9 of 10

Shelton Benjamin had a lot of potential when he debuted back in 2002. He was made the king of the mid-card for a while, but never translated to the next level. Benjamin's lack of a good gimmick seemed to be answered with the Gold Standard gimmick, but his charisma didn't seem to follow. After being released by WWE, Shelton went to the independent promotions and is now in Ring of Honor. With a lot of mentions to Ring of Honor talent in WWE recently, could Benjamin be back to WWE sooner rather than later?

1) Kurt Angle

10 of 10

Kurt Angle is an all-time great in pro wrestling. He left for TNA five years ago and was the king of that company for a while. Now, he seems to floating around in the middle of nowhere and may not be very happy about it. Angle could come back to tie up the loose end of his WWE career and get himself into the Hall of Fame, the place he belongs to be in.
