NFL Free Agency Rumors: Jason Snelling's 5 Possible Destinations

Joe Rapolla Jr.Jun 7, 2018

Everyone is huffing and puffing, but alas, after a hectic past 10 days, the NFL free agency news seems to have died down.

After the lockout ended last week, it was an exciting time for football fans and players alike. Tons of huge signings and trades went down; some of these shocked us and some of these did not.

Some players still remained unsigned however, and one very talented free agent currently is running back Jason Snelling.

Where will the four-year veteran and career backup to Michael Turner sign? Here are five possible options.

5. New York Giants

1 of 5

The New York Giants may not have an overwhelming need at running back, but if they can grab Snelling at a reasonable price, they may give it go.

Both of the Giants current running backs, while very talented, don't seem too happy in New York. Ahmad Bradshaw will reportedly sign a new contract for four years and $18 million. He surely feels as though he's worth more than that.

Brandon Jacobs was openly discourse last season after losing the starting job to Bradshaw, which led many critics and fans to question is Jacobs was a team player. He has also never recreated the numbers from his breakout season.

Snelling could be a good fit as a third runner, and possibly even a better (and more motivated) player than Jacobs, yet I think this one is the longest shot on the list.

4. New York Jets

The New York Jets are a very complete football team with the exception of their run game.

Before everyone jumps out of their seat to critique that statement, hear me out. Shonn Greene and LaDainian Tomlinson did amount for 766 and 914 yards last season, respectively. Greene was not a model of consistency though, and LT, who surprised many with his performance last year, is aging and may not be able to amount for over 900 yards again this season.

Snelling would be a very healthy and reliable back to make the Jets duo a trio. I can see them running a system of Greene and Snelling up the field with LT taking a lot of goal-line carries. It could work well, and Snelling could very well compete with Greene for the starting role.

3. St. Louis Rams

Steven Jackson is obviously the man in St. Louis; he is one of the most powerful and successful runners in the league. That being said, can you name his backup?

It's Kenneth Darby, who over the past three years in St. Louis has taken a maximum of 34 rushing attempts in a season.

Snelling could give the Rams a lot more confidence in a backup as he is much more powerful runner than Darby. He could complement Jackson well and take some of the load of his shoulder's while also being very efficient.

2. Atlanta Falcons

Why wouldn't Atlanta re-sign him?

He is very popular with the fans, apparently, and has proved to be both an effective blocker and nice complement to Michael Turner.

They might not want to spend the money on giving Snelling a new contract, but it's not the worst idea for the Falcons.

Rookie Jacquizz Rodgers will, however, let Atlanta feel more comfortable in letting Snelling go.

1. Baltimore Ravens

5 of 5

The Baltimore Ravens don't have nearly as many offensive weapons as they are a good team.

Ray Rice shoulders way too much of the load, and the Baltimore sports scene has been crying out for a reliable man to back him up.

Snelling may be the answer. He is a more powerful blocker than Rice who can come in as relief and as a third down back. I predict, with decent certainty, that Jason Snelling will be a Baltimore Raven in due time.
