Kyle Orton Trade Rumors: 5 Reasons a Trade to Dolphins Will Still Happen
Kyle Orton should still get traded to the Miami Dolphins this offseason. There is too much indicating that the Broncos and former Bears QB is on his way out and Miami is the most logical destination.
The Dolphins have been going with Chad Henne as their starter for nearly two years now, but may be ready to give up on him. Henne has not proven to be a successful NFL starter and the team needs better to compete in the rugged AFC East.
The Miami fans even want Orton to come to South Beach. They were chanting his name after Henne underwhelmed in a scrimmage today.
The Dolphins signed Matt Moore to a two-year deal, but Moore has never been serviceable a starter in this league and is on a backups contract right now. Henne could be benched and Moore could be the 3rd QB if Miami pushes a deal through for Orton.
They also could include one of their quarterbacks in the deal to free room up. There are whole number of options available for the trade to still work, despite some contrary reports saying that it’s dead.
Let’s take a look at the five biggest reasons why Kyle Orton is still a possibility for Miami this offseason.
5. Tony Sparano
1 of 5Sparano has only had one winning season as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins.
The first season he joined up, 2008, the team improved upon a 1-15 record by going 11-5 and making the playoffs.
Since then he has posted two consecutive 7-9 seasons, both good for only third place in the AFC East.
Sparano did sign a two-year extension after Stephen M. Ross, the Miami owner, called him the perfect man for the job in January.
However, the fickle nature of NFL owners and GMs does not mean Sparano’s job is by any means safe.
If Sparano has a low-win season, which his Dolphins are perfectly capable of with Chad Henne running the team, he could get fired at the end of next season or even mid-season.
Look for Sparano to push for an Orton trade for job security.
4. Broncos' 2010 Season
2 of 5Kyle Orton was the starting quarterback for the Broncos first 13 games last season. He led the team to a 3-10 record.
That is simply awful and may be a reason why the Broncos want to move Orton and make way for Tim Tebow.
Orton came to town in 2009 as the starter and led the team to a respectable 8-8 record in his first year.
While his numbers were similar in his second, the team as a whole underperformed. Head coach Josh McDaniels got fired over this but the front office may be looking to wash their hands completely clean of the regime.
Reports are that Knowshon Moreno and other McDaniels guys are falling out of favor and the John Fox era is beginning with a lot of personnel changes.
Moving Orton would be a big step for them.
3. Matt Moore
3 of 5The Dolphins brought in Matt Moore as an unrestricted free agent who last played for the Carolina Panthers.
Moore has 22 games of experience over four seasons with his former team and is a career backup.
He signed a two-year/$5 million deal to be one for the Miami Dolphins.
Coach Tony Sparano called him “a guy we’re going to bring along.”
Is it really worth it to develop a quarterback who is going to be 27 next month?
Orton is only 28 and already a legitimate starter in this league and has been for two years.
Moore is nothing compared to him and the team can’t be serious about trying to develop him.
Miami fans are hoping they are not and will eventually relent and bring in Orton to take the team’s reins.
2. Chad Henne's Performance
4 of 5Henne has not done much for the Miami Dolphins.
He has not taken the team to the playoffs in either of his two years as a starting QB and has not even managed to throw more TDs than INTs in a season.
Henne is a 2008 second round draft pick who the Dolphins groomed under Chad Pennington.
Henne was a standout at Michigan and set five major school records for a QB. He seemed like a safe pick but has not panned out.
The team and fans are frustrated with his performance and feel that Orton would be a much better fit in the system.
Henne has had Brandon Marshall and Devon Bess to pass to and Ronnie Brown and Rickie Williams keeping defenses honest.
The team should have been more successful than they were on offense but never lived up to their potential.
Much of this blame can be laid upon Henne, so the Dolphins should look to dump him.
1. Tim Tebow
5 of 5Tebow played in nine games last season and got the starting QB job for the last three.
Denver was 3-10 when he took over and finished 4-12.
Tebow might not have had a great success but played decently in his three chances to run the team.
Tim finished the season by throwing 41/82 for 654 yards and 5 TDs with just 3 INTs. He also ran 43 times for 227 yards and 6 TDs.
Denver management was apparently impressed enough with these figures and his intangibles as a team leader to make Kyle Orton expendable this coming season.
While reports are starting to leak out that Orton is outplaying Tebow in practice, the media frenzy is only going to get worse if the regular season begins and both QB’s are still on the roster.
Look for the Broncos to push harder to get a deal through to move Orton as the season draws nearer.
