WWE: Is Drew McIntyre the Future, or Future Endeavoured?

Colin StoneJun 7, 2018

Drew McIntyre is a man who has always divided opinion.

Whether it's on wrestling forums, on Twitter, or at live events, fans are seemingly split down the middle on the Sinister Scotsman.

He's like Marmite—you either love him, or you hate him.

I, for one, am a big fan of his. Now, this isn't solely because I myself am Scottish, neither is it to do with the fact that I currently go to the university that he graduated from prior to his move to America—no, this is down to the fact that I like him as a wrestler.

After all, Vince McMahon proclaimed him as "the future of the WWE" for a reason.

In my opinion, McIntyre has everything it takes to be a main-event superstar.

He has the looks; he has the in-ring ability; he has the mic skills (sure, he's no Rock, but he's not Ezekiel Jackson either); and he's got charisma.

But for one reason or another, we haven't seen McIntyre in a meaningful feud since his mini-feud with Trent Barreta on Smackdown! earlier this year—more than 6 months ago.

After several strong performances on Smackdown! in early 2011, as well as an impressive Elimination Chamber showing, McIntyre was moved over to Raw in the WWE Draft. Some people, including myself, thought this would be Drew's chance to shine. However, in a heel-heavy Raw, McIntyre was quickly lost in the shuffle behind the likes of Miz, Del Rio, R-Truth, Dolph Ziggler, Jack Swagger and even Mason Ryan.

He hasn't appeared on WWE TV since being taken out by Mark Henry and the Big Show a few weeks back.

Prior to that, he appeared in a short segment on Raw Roulette where he was on the receiving end of a Sweet Chin Music.

So where does Drew go from here? Does he turn face?

I had suspected—perhaps "hoped" is a better word—that McIntyre would return to Raw this week and confront Dolph Ziggler after his beatdown by the Big Show, and in the process, turn face.

McIntyre struggled to get his heel persona over on Smackdown! last year during his feuds with Teddy Long and Matt Hardy, so perhaps a face turn is what is needed to reboot his character.

There are other potential options, though.

Rowdy Roddy Piper recently expressed a desire to take Drew "under his wing". However, as far as I'm aware, nothing has come of that.

Drew and Kelly Kelly seemed to be having an on-screen relationship in late 2010 which could've worked out well for the Scotsman, but like many storylines in WWE, it simply faded out of existence. Could that be revived?

When McIntyre received his first push in late 2009, Triple H was apparently "very high" on it. Perhaps with Triple H now as COO, he could be pushed again?

And as I stated in my last article, a stable with the likes of Wade Barrett, Sheamus and Mason Ryan could really give McIntyre the boost his flagging career needs.

The first line of Drew's kick-ass theme music goes like this: "What's that metronome I hear, perhaps the end is drawing near."

Perhaps the end really is drawing near for Drew McIntyre.

And that's the bottom line, cos Colin Stone said so!
