UFC 133: Tito Ortiz Is in Big Trouble Against Rashad Evans
Every time I talk about this weekend's fight between Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans, I end up quoting Star Wars. Simply put, “I have a bad feeling about this.”
While I’ve never been a huge supporter of Ortiz, I’ve consistently found myself rooting for him during his UFC career, (mostly due to my intense dislike of Chuck Liddell, but still.)
Once again, this weekend Tito has drawn an opponent that I truly hope he beats, but unlike his past few fights, I can’t picture him winning this fight. In fact, I see him losing in embarrassing fashion.
Sure, Tito made it out of his UFC 132 bout with Ryan Bader with little more than a scratch, but does that mean he needs to hop back in there immediately?
Rashad Evans is a consensus top 5 light heavyweight and f he hadn’t been forced out of his UFC 128 bout with Shogun Rua, he might be holding the title right now.
Tito is 1-4-1 in his last 6 fights and his win over Bader, while impressive, was his first win since 2006. On what planet does this fight even make sense?
Once you actually start looking at their skills, it gets even scarier for ‘The Huntington Beach Bad Boy’.
Rashad has a pretty sizable advantage on the feet, as he has shown he can knock guys out with both his hands and his feet. His heavy hands have taken out both Chuck Liddell and Forrest Griffin, and he was able to stumble Rampage Jackson back at UFC 114.
Tito hasn’t won a fight by knockout or TKO since 2006 against Ken Shamrock, and three of his eight TKO wins have come against Shamrock.
Advantage, Evans.
If Tito gains top control he could cause some damage, but it is rare to see Rashad on his back, and at this point in his career Tito is no longer a threat to get the fight to the ground.
Throw in the fact that Rashad comes from a wrestling base and Tito’s best chance at winning the fight has taken a considerable hit.
Rashad is better everywhere the fight goes, and since he usually has a pretty good game plan I don’t see him doing anything stupid here.
Unless Tito’s chin can hold up against Rashad’s pipe bomb of a right hand, expect the main event to be a short one this Saturday.
