CM Punk: 5 Different Ways Punk's Wrestling Future Could Play Out
There is no doubt that Punk is currently the hottest man in the business. No doubt at all. Anyone who says differently is wrong. Plain and simple - wrong. As goes the conversation, the question comes up - What is next?
What is next for Punk? What is on the horizon? What is in his long-term and/or short-term future? Today, we will dive into 5 scenarios where he will go. For the sake of being realistic, and I am - I am going to assume he goes nowhere near TNA. I am not a "fantasy booker", so that option is out. It isn't happening, so why waste time on it? With that said, let's do this!!!
Passes John Cena as Top Draw
1 of 5This one may not be as crazy as some think. Cena is no longer a young man. While Punk is not a young man either, he is "fresh" in terms of time on top of the card. Cena has "been there, done that" with a lot of the top guys, while a lot of Punk's material could be very new and exciting for fans.
While it is just a rumor, a report online states that the recent Money in the Bank PPV did over 400,000 buys. That is a HUGE number, considering they only had 3-4 weeks of build. The name of the show is NOT an established name at all, like WrestleMania, Summerslam, or even Royal Rumble. His merchandise is already either back-ordered or sold out. John Cena better watch his back because right now there is whole group of guys ready to fight for the top spot in the industry.
ROH
2 of 5Who is there to say he even has much of a future in WWE? Without getting too deep into the scenario, ROH wrestling just landed a pretty good TV deal. Nothing major, but nothing. A solid TV deal with tons of ground to move up with. Punk has a bunch of friends there and has a deep history with the company.
Too many things would have to happen for that jump to take place, but it is certainly an option. I hate to keep mentioning rumors (because some are true, some are not), but there has been a few rumblings thaat ROH and WWE have "some sort of agreement". Whether it is funding, whether it is talent moves, whether it is as a development system, there are rumors. WWE and ECW had a mutual partnership back in the day, and it was all kept a secret, so Punk being involved with ROH one day could happen...
Fired and Works the Indies
3 of 5This ties back into Slide # 3. He is a very hot property right now, so it make sense that WWE would want him back ASAP and main event their second biggest show of the year. However, we have seen big men either be fired or ask for their releases in the past.
Punk is NOT a company guy. Trouble for not wearing a suit as champion. Does not fit the mold of drinking/doing drugs that many wrestlers are (in?)famous for. He is straight-edge. He speaks his mind. He gets under the skin of many higher-ups (rumored), just by the way he walks around the arena. The man does not toe any company line, and while it is paying off for him right now, someday that could come back to hurt him.
Stays Right Where He Is Now
4 of 5Sheamus fits the description best. I am a HUGE Sheamus fan, but outside of a few months, he has stayed in the same spot. Good matches. Good gimmick. Great personality. Just has not had that really big breakout moment yet, just kind of staying...right...where...he...is.
That is CM Punk as well. He is on fire right now and has been for the past month, but when did he do last year? A feud with Rey..okay. His SES group was treated like garbage. his feud with Orton was nothing much and him leading the New Nexus was a waste. Sadly, of all the options, this one is most likely. He gets a few main events here and there, but for the most part he stays...right...where...he...is.
Gets Buried
5 of 5Great Khali. Jack Swagger. Two names that mean nothing nowadays. Two men that also were World Champions recently. Khali had a nice little run in 2007 as a dominant heel. Jack Swagger was World Champion last year. He beat Jericho. He beat Edge. He even beat Randy Orton clean on PPV. Now - he loses to Evan Bourne on a weekly basis and is on the house shows, losing to Chris Masters.
We are all fans of CM Punk, but this is one route WWE could take. Nobody wants it to happen, but in the back of our minds, we fear it. If this were to happen, any number of moves could happen. Punk quits. He loses interest real quick. He just lets his latest contract expire. Really, anything could happen in Punk's future, and that is why we all watch...
