7 Things We Learned from America vs Toluca

Jerry SanchezJun 3, 2018

Club America squared off against a big rival this Sunday morning: Los Diablos de Toluca, (The Devils of Toluca). After a poor defensive play led to a goal for Toluca, the Aguilas came back to tie the game 20 minutes later.

Even with facing Toluca against 10 men, (Defender Edgar Duenas was red carded), America struggled to capitalize throughout the game and just didn't look as dominant as they did in the previous game. America played without Daniel 'El Rolfi' Montenegro.

A very interesting game and we learned a couple of things from this 1-1 outcome. Here are the major 7 things we learned about this encounter.

7. Vincente Matias Vuoso Could Be a Better Scorer

1 of 8

This one is a stretch. Last cup, he had a lackluster display. He managed to score goals, but in a real inconsistent fashion. He wasn't the player the azulcrema fans hoped for and wanted. There were times where it was a mystery as why America had signed him.

Maybe the goal he scored could boost up his confidence as well as his presence on the pitch. When with Santos Laguna, he was a more feared goal scorer than he is now. As long as he manages to play smart and score here and there, he'll maybe help America get that 11th championship us fans have been waiting for. Hopefully his play on the game isn't as bad as his celebration. (I actually get a good laugh at the way he dances though!)

6. Alfredo Talavera Looks to Be in Top Shape

2 of 8

Man, he really did work out there. In case you didn't watch the game, he saved Toluca from losing the game. His defense failed him on Vuoso's goal but other than that, he was the best on the pitch the whole game.

This is good news for the Mexican National team. He was a great player for them in the Gold Cup. I look for him to be the 2nd goalie for the National team. Ajaccio and former America goalie, Guillermo Ochoa, would be the obvious starter if he gets better in France. But Talavera looks good and Toluca fans hope he can stay as good for the rest of the season.

5. Armando Navarette Still Seems to Struggle

3 of 8

Boy, it must be hard on him. He's trying to fill in Ochoa's shoes; and is struggling to do so. He is a good goalie, but he isn't a great goalie like Ochoa was. The fact is that he hasn't been a starter for a club in 7 years. That's a long time. And to try to get back to playing in actual games consistently rather than just to practice is a tough shift for him and would be tough for anyone else!

He really messed up in the game against Italian team, Juventus, causing America to lose. I do hope he gains more confidence as well as a boost in goalkeeping. Not only that, but if he can play better, this will make America's defense a higher ranked one in the league.

4. Vincente Sanchez Is Really Hated by the Toluca Fans

4 of 8

If you see any highlights about the fans before, during, and after the game, they hate him. Whether it's a grown man, a grandpa, or a ten year old, they hate him. They obviously don't appreciate the fact that he went to America. But I'm sure the former Toluca player could care less. He's the captain and one of the better players in the most prestigious team in Mexico.

Every player on the squad is hated by everyone else in reality, but today Sanchez got most of the hate.

3. America Has to Go Through Another Year of Not Beating Toluca on Enemy Grounds

5 of 8

In case you didn't know, America has not beat Toluca in an away match for 6 years. That's just infuriating for us America fans. Now we have to listen to analysts saying "it's been 7 years since America hasn't beat Toluca in the Stadium, Nemesio Diez".

The fans didn't want it to be another year, but hopefully 7 is the charm and America will finally beat them on their home field.

2. America Needs Montenegro and Reyna

6 of 8

It seemed as if America needed a play maker. Daniel 'El Rolfi' Montenegro and Angel Reyna are arguably America's best players. They both can make their own plays as well as shots.

Reyna's a headache towards defenders but his inconsistent finishing keeps him from being a better player. He was last year's top goal scorer for the Mexican league but he could have made more goals. America really needs his play on the pitch.

Montenegro suffered a small muscular overload. He was kept from playing and you could tell America needed him. Vicente Sanchez is a good play maker, but America really was at a disadvantage without 'El Rolfi'.

1. Benitez Is the Best Acquisition Since Salvador Cabanas

7 of 8

This guy came from Santos Laguna and Birmingham. He was already known as a deadly scorer and now he should really be feared throughout the league by defenders.

He's a strong, fast, skilled finisher and passer. In just two games he's already impressed most fans and already has scored 2 goals and recorded one assist.

There's so much more waiting to explode and I see him leading the league in scoring.

Salvador Cabanas was possibly the best signing in recent memory. He was a good all around player but what really made him standout was his scoring ability.

Both the Paraguayan and Colombian are lethal scorers. There's a lot left in the season, but I can tell Benitez will not disappoint.

Conclusion

8 of 8

Well that's it, hopefully America will make us as happy as the guy from the picture above is.

I will try to update Mexican League games since it's evident nobody is really doing that! Mostly America games is what I'll be focusing on.

Let me know what you guys think! Comment below and as always, thanks for the read.
