I Got $1,000.00 On Roy Jones Jr!

King JNov 6, 2008

First off let it be known that I am biased. I am the biggest Roy Jones Jr. fan on the planet! However, I will try to write this as objective as I possibly can. In both of their respected primes Roy Jones would clearly demolish Joe Calzaghe hands down. Roy in his day was so fast, so strong, so powerful he made you believe that it really was just that easy to knock out your opponent at will without even being cleanly hit at all.

Many people forgot he defeated a hungry Bernard Hopkins with one hand injured. He was the first to knockdown James Toney and defeated him on pure speed. This was when James Toney was regarded as the number one pound for pound champion.

But today Roy Jones is definitely not in his prime. With his back to back knock out losses, his diminished speed especially in his legs. Some have even criticized Roy for being “gun shy” in his most recent fights.  At the age of 39 Roy still looks great physically to the human eye but more importantly one must view the mental strength of Roy.

Let’s be blunt here the cocky arrogant Roy who believe so much in himself was the prime Roy that could do literally what ever he wanted to do. We have not seen that cocky old Roy since probably the John Ruiz Heavyweight fight. Personally I was not impressed by Roy’s most recent three fights with Prince Badi Ajamu, Anthony Hanshaw, and Tito Trinidad. I wasn’t impressed because I knew the old prime Roy would make all of these three guys sleep, and sleep at will.

But it wasn’t until I watched the HBO 24/7 program where Roy explained it himself that he purposely fought these three opponents in the manner in which he did to prepare himself for Joe Calzaghe. Now if one were to believe that to be true then it would make a bit more sense why it seemed Roy was holding back or even carrying these opponents trying to get more rounds in.

I just hope that this is true and that Roy isn’t just saying that to make up for his less than impressive wins. As for Roy’s mental game, it seems Roy is confident these days. Roy has not been this confident for the last couple years. He is again finally making the cocky jokes about himself again and talking about himself in the third person and that to me is a good thing.

I saw an open workout of Roy hitting the pads with his assistant trainer Alfie and he look sharp. He looked fast almost as fast as the Roy who showed up in Portland, Oregon against Clinton Woods. His feet looked light, he looked comfortable, focused, and confident all over again.

In the final episode of HBO’s 24/7 we see a very emotional Roy in tears over the recent Presidential Election. Roy was so moved that Obama had won the election that he basically found a deeper incentive for victory this Saturday night, making a win for all African Americans and of course for all of America.

Seeing this HBO 24/7 footage showed me that Roy’s mind is back on track and I feel that was the number one thing that was holding him back since the very first Tarver loss.

Now Joe Calazghe on the other hand looks to appear to be pretty much the same old Joe. His open work out did not seem to be as impressive as Roy’s nor compared to his previous training camps.

I did not see the same intense Joe throwing ridiculous endless punches into the heavy bags as usual. I didn’t even see the lighting speed that I was used to. This confused me a bit and had me wondering if Joe is not taking this fight with Roy as seriously as he should? Another odd statement I heard was that Joe had made an agreement with Roy to have a rematch if Joe loses on Saturday and the rematch would take place back in Wales.

I’ve never heard Joe even request for a rematch clause ever. Is this an indication that Joe is not confident that he will win Saturday? Why would he have a rematch clause set and why already plan to have it in his backyard? That is interesting and definitely out of character for the undefeated champion.

So in short. Again I am biased and you already know who I feel will win this fight on Saturday and that is Roy Jones Junior. I even went so far as to putting $1,000.00 on Roy Jones to win this match. You can even see my video on YouTube, its called:
