Miguel Cotto Seeks Retirement After Margarito and Pacquiao Rematches

Justin TateAug 2, 2011

Legendary boxing trainer Emmanuel Steward seeks for light middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (36-2, 28 KOs) to imitate heavyweight legend Lennox Lewis by defeating every boxer who's beaten him before leaving the sport. Steward told Ring Magazine the following:

"

"If he knocks out Margarito and redeems himself, it would be a good fight for him to get with Pacquiao again....since those are the only two guys who have beaten Miguel, that would be the perfect scenario for him to go out on."

"

Cotto has been rejuvenated as a fighter ever since winning the WBA light middleweight belt from Yuri Foreman (28-2, 8 KOs) in June 2009.

December 3, Cotto faces Antonio Margarito (38-7, 27 KOs) at New York City's Madison Square Garden in a rematch of their 2008 Fight of the Year candidate brawl. Margarito gave Cotto the first loss of his career.

The validity of the loss came under question once Margarito was discovered with plaster in his gloves in one fight after defeating Cotto by 11th-round knockout.

Though many give him a chance to beat Margarito, beating Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38 KOs) will be a tougher assignment.

With his new trainer and renewed dedication, Cotto avenging his loss to Pacquiao isn't so far fetched a possibility.
