NFL Free Agency: Kevin Kolb Traded for Rodgers-Cromartie Plus Pick

Eric RiveraJul 28, 2011

Ridiculous trades aren't common in the NFL. Neither are overrated players. Neither are ridiculous trades for overrated players. The first of these trades came today between the Arizona Cardinals and the Philadelphia Eagles, dealing Pro-Bowl Cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second-round pick for Eagles back-up quarterback Kevin Kolb. Kolb signed a five year, $63.5 million extension with $21 million guaranteed.

Did I hear that right?

The Arizona Cardinals traded away a good, young corner and a draft-pick for a quarterback who threw for only seven touchdowns and seven interceptions last year? And yes, he was injured, but shouldn't that be of more concern as well?

At least when the Kansas City Chiefs paid Tom Brady's back-up, Matt Cassel, (also for $63 Million) he had actually finished a complete season with his team.

Kevin Kolb? He only started because Michael Vick got injured.

Here's a rundown of his starts:

Green Bay, 5/10 (50 percent) for 24 yards.

San Francisco, 21/37 (67,7 percent) for 253 yards, with 1 touchdown.

Atlanta, 23/29 (79.3 percent) for 326 yards, with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception.

Tennessee, 26/48 (54.2 percent) for 231 yards, with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions.

Dallas, 18/36 (50 percent) for 162 yards, with 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions.

Not exactly what you want in your franchise quarterback. Consider the fact that Kolb went 2-3 as a starter, and suddenly this move looks like a complete steal for Philadelphia. Sure, Kevin Kolb had two good games at San Francisco and against Atlanta, but both defenses ranked 24th and 22nd against the pass.

Meanwhile, Donovan McNabb and Matt Hasselbeck were readily available, and next year, Andrew Luck. But with Cardinals desperate to win, the Eagles took full advantage of their need and robbed them like a bank.

Luckily for Kolb, the NFC West is the weakest division in the NFL. His weaknesses should be masked well by playing against sub-par teams often. However, Cardinal fans shouldn't expect their new quarterback to take them to the promised land.
