Albert Haynesworth: Washington Redskins Rid of Problem with Trade to Patriots

Rob BeloteJul 28, 2011

For the better part of a year, fans in Washington D.C. have been waiting for this day.

Albert Haynesworth is no longer a member of the Washington Redskins, as the team finally found a trade partner for the defensive tackle.

He was a typical signing in the Dan Snyder era: a high-profile player with questionable character who got a huge pay day from Washington based on a great season or two at the end of his previous contract who then got to D.C. and failed to produce.

Haynesworth and head coach Mike Shanahan butted heads every step of the way, with the former Pro Bowler deciding he didn't like the idea of playing in the new 3-4 defensive scheme being implemented by the team.

Now, he's the problem of the Washington Redskins no longer, as a trade was reached to send him to the New England Patriots. Yet again, Bill Belichick's team brings a head-case player to Massachusetts, and Patriots fans are hoping it works out as well for them as it did with Randy Moss, Corey Dillon and others.

Just like with Randy Moss a few seasons ago, for whom the Patriots only parted ways with a fourth-round draft pick, New England gets problem child Haynesworth for a relatively low price. The Washington Redskins, in addition to parting ways with the biggest source of drama in the locker room, receive a fifth-round pick in the 2013 draft.
