DeAngelo Is Back: Williams, Panthers Agree to Five-Year, $43 Million Dollar Deal

Evan HigginsJul 27, 2011

Ron Rivera and the Carolina Panthers have done everything right so far since the lockout was lifted, first re-signing defensive end Charles Johnson to a long-term deal, and now Carolina has come to an agreement with running back DeAngelo Williams on a five-year, $43 million dollar deal with $21 million guaranteed.

He was Drafted 27th overall by Carolina in the 2006 Draft. At 28 years old, Williams still has a lot of years ahead of him.

However, Williams went down with a season-ending injury last season that allowed him to play in only six games, putting up a career-low 361 yards and one touchdown.

He has ended the last two seasons on injured reserve, playing in 13 games the season prior.

Just two seasons ago, Williams was one of the top backs in the NFL, leading the league in 2008 with 18 touchdowns, with 1,515 yards that on the ground.

Williams holds the team record for rushing yards (4,211) and touchdowns (31). He has one Pro Bowl appearance, and that was in 2009.

Carolina will keep there three-headed monster running attack with Williams, Jonathan Stewart and Mike Goodson, who broke out last season when Williams went down.

With Carolina now locking up Johnson and Williams and able to keep Thomas Davis for one more year due to his contract, the Panthers' can now focus their attention on whether or not to keep receiver Steve Smith, signing first-overall pick Cam Newton and look into free agency to help improve this 2-14 team.

Carolina has signed safety Kevin Payne, defensive tackle Ron Edwards, kicker Olindo Mare and tight end Ben Hartstock since the lockout was lifted.

Panther fans, "Double Trouble," is back.
