Utah Jazz Looking Very Good in Their 3-0 Start to The Season

Bryan GonzalezNov 5, 2008

The AK47 experiment seems to be paying of for head coach Jerry Salone as the Utah Jazz have shot out of the gates to start the NBA season 3-0. What is even more impressive is they have done it without star point guard Deron Williams who has been out with a sprained ankle, but could return as early as tonight vs the Portland Trail Blazers.

I know it has only been three games but I'm extremely impressed with everything I've seen this year from the Jazz. Heck even the lights out player introductions I was impressed with, you gotta admit that is really cool.

All the problems from last year have seemed a thing of the past this year. Turnovers, defense, not beating bad teams, and road games. All of these problems from last year have vanished in the first week! The Jazz have stepped up the D in a big way and are holding opponents to a league best 82.2 ppg. They also set a team record for fewest turnovers with 5 last Saturday vs the Clippers. Then they put away the Clippers twice, once at home, and then once on the road.

The players have played great as well. Boozer has stepped up and seems to be the vocal leader now that Dwill is on the sidelines. He also has returned to the 20pt 10 reb guy we know.

Ak coming off the bench seems to be a brilliant move by Salone as Ak is second in scoring and rebounding to Boozer. He seems to fit better there and has said that he likes it better. So Ak could be to the Jazz what Ginobli is to San Antonio.

So far though I think the best thing has been the improvement from Ronnie Brewer. Last year players would sag off him and didn't respect his jump shot at all and that hindered the pick and roll from Dwill and Booz. But this year he has shown great improvement in that area and also he is attacking the basket now that players have to play him close. This will only allow more freedom from everyone else on the floor.

The Jazz I feel are the deepest team in the league with 10 players that can play on any night. The bench is now anchored by Ak and the addition of Brevin Knight adds experience that was lacking last year.

All these things are huge for Utah and if they continue to do them well they will contend for the top spot in the west.
