Steve Smith Signs with Philadelphia Eagles

Jamal WilburgJun 7, 2018

Steve Smith, former New York Giants wide receiver has signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Smith is the 14th free agent the Eagles added this offseason.

It is somewhat surprising that Smith was signed by the Eagles and not resigned by the Giants. Perhaps the Giants aren’t sure how he will perform following the microfracture surgery performed on his knee in December.

Some evidence of this includes Giants head coach Tom Coughlin’s comments about Smith earlier this week.

"It's going to be a long haul for him," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said Wednesday after meeting with Smith. "Hopefully we can cut through some of that and see where it goes. That's all I can say. He looks good though."

It will be interesting to see how forgiving and receptive Eagles fans are for Smith. Earlier this offseason he posted a picture of an empty Eagles trophy case to his social media accounts.

One thing Smith provides is another option in case receiver Jeremy Maclin continues to have health issues during the season. The best case scenario is that the team will have Desean Jackson, Maclin, Smith, Jason Avant, and Riley Cooper catching passes from Michael Vick this season.

Other players signed by the Eagles this offseason are Nnamdi Asomugha, Jason Babin, Ronnie Brown, Anthony Hargrove, Ryan Harris, Johnnie Lee Higgins, Cullen Jenkins, Derek Landri, Donald Lee, Evan Mathis, Jarrad Page, Chris Wilson, and Vince Young.
