Creating Controversy: Toronto Maple Leafs Defense

Bleacher ReportNov 4, 2008

The defense of the Leafs in '07-'08 was terrible.

They were getting out-shot and giving pucks away night-in and night-out. And of course there was that time that Bryan McCabe won the game for the Sabres in overtime, but I'm not even going to go there.

This years defense has been consistent to say the least. They are not allowing nearly as many shots as last years defense, and they are getting the puck up to the forwards, which has been creating goals.

There is one problem however.

The Maple Leafs have 10 (nine if you include Ian White as a forward) NHL-ready defensemen, and only six, possibly seven spots to fill. The Leafs' "D" includes Mike Van Ryn, Tomas Kaberle, Pavel Kubina, Anton Stralman, Jonas Frogren, Luke Schenn, Carlo Colaiacovo, Jeff Finger, and maybe Ian White.

Mike Van Ryan has been consistent this season, Tomas Kaberle and Pavel Kubina have spots all but locked up, while Luke Schenn has had a great rookie campaign. Jonas Frogren has been in and out of the lineup, as well as Carlo Colaiacovo.

There is some wiggle room though.

Ian White played great in his first NHL game as a forward (one goal), and with his two-way contract, and because he is still learning, you can easily send Anton Stralman to the minors.

Ron Wilson has used this room really well. He has gave all of his players a good chance (with the exception of Ian White) to play well. He has gave lots of time to Frogren and Finger, along with Colaiacovo and Stralman. Also, don't forget about Luke Schenn. They have played him in every game, and every situation.

I'm interested in seeing if they can hold the defense of the Maple Leafs together. I would like to know your thoughts.
