Victor Martinez Video: Watch Tigers' DH Dance His Way Past Kurt Suzuki

Gabe ZaldivarJun 5, 2018

The dog days of summer can be long and arduous, but they can also be entertaining. Victor Martinez proved that you can dance your way around home plate, and still have time to score.

On Tuesday evening, the Oakland A's were taking on the Tigers in Detroit. By the fifth inning, Oakland was well behind, and the Tigers had the game in hand.

But we cannot forget the first run of the night. Detroit received a memorable run for the highlight reel. It is one that is sure to be played on their jumbotron for years.

The play in question came with two outs and Martinez at first. Carlos Guillen slammed one down the first base line past Connor Jackson.

Martinez got on his horse and rounded first. At some point, he must have ditched the cleats and put on his dancing shoes.

As he neared home plate, one thought crossed through Martinez's mind, "I am donesos." At least, that is the thought he should have had as A's catcher Kurt Suzuki received the ball with a dozen feet for Martinez yet to travel.

The first basemen turned designated hitter proved he is still light on his feet. He went to the outside and sashayed his way to safety.

The run was a comedy of errors that only Fred Astaire could enjoy. Suzuki immediately cried foul, but the replay shows Martinez clearly got his hand in before the catcher tagged his chest.

This left me with two lasting impressions. Martinez could have been a running back with his juke moves, albeit a very slow running back. Secondly, Suzuki couldn't guard Joey Chestnut from the dish. Instead of reaching for Martinez, he needed to protect the plate with his entire body.

I could continue to gripe about the defensive meltdown, but I am having far too much fun watching this dance lesson.
