Surprise performances and marquee moments by no-name players have become the norm in the world of golf, which is still clamoring for a definitive face with Tiger Woods struggling to return to form after two years of physical and emotional setbacks.

That trend continued with the opening round of play at the 2011 British Open. What was supposed to be a Thursday plagued by gusting winds and sprinkling rain turned out instead to be a rather pleasant outing for a significant portion of the field, with a whopping 50 participants finishing the day at or under par at Royal St. George's.

Thomas Bjorn and 20-year-old Tom Lewis, who set the record for lowest round at the Open by an amateur, currently rule the roost in the race for the Claret Jug at five-under-par after posting 65's right out of the gate.

With 54 left on the docket for the weekend, there's still plenty of time for big-name favorites like Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald, Phil Mickelson and Graeme McDowell, all of whom are within six strokes of the lead, to make up ground on the terrific Tom's.

The leader board figures to shift along with the weather as the weekend goes on, with Friday inviting more clouds and stronger winds before showers streak in on Saturday.
