Almost Too Much For Words, Almost: Alabama Is Nation's New # 1

Justin KlinkenbergNov 2, 2008

Wow. Just wow.  That's all I could say to myself after I watched Texas Tech pull off that amazing win last night.  I didn't know what to think.   Could that really have just happened?  Could the only team keeping Alabama out of the top spot really have just lost?  I was astonished.  I couldn't contain myself.  'This may be it', I kept telling myself.  I could barely sleep I was so excited.

So I got up and was constantly checking the chatter to get the pulse of what people thought.  Who's going to be #1?  I was somewhat worried that even though there should have been no possible way that they weren't #1, that somehow they would be screwed out of the top spot for the second time this year.  Then, it happened.

For the first time in my lifetime, Alabama is ranked #1 during the regular season.  This team has risen from the ashes unlike any in recent memory.  They have a run-snuffing defense that has allowed only one rushing touchdown all year, tops in the nation.  They are number four in total defense, allowing just 251.44 yards per game.  This could really be it.  This could really be their year.

Before I get too excited for my own good, Bama still has a lot left to prove.  They have to go into Death Valley this week and take it to the #15 LSU Tigers.  That will be Alabama head coach Nick Saban's first time coaching in Baton Rouge since leaving LSU to coach the Miami Dolphins.  LSU fans will be out in force and looking for revenge.  They will be drunk, rowdy, and most of all loud.  Very loud.  This will be a big test for this Crimson Tide team as to whether they deserve this #1 ranking.  I think they will come out on top, but they probably won't hang 50 on them so some Gator fans will be crying foul.

Coach Saban needs to keep his team focused on playing one game at a time, just like he has all season.  LSU is no joke, so they have to play with just as much heart as with any other team.  How amazing would it be to see Alabama roll on from this LSU game to the SEC Championship Game all the way to the National Championship Game?  Pretty amazing.  One game at a time.

Roll Tide Roll!
