UFC 91: Where Did All the Brock Haters Go?
Can you believe that we're only two weeks away from UFC 91?
I have been waiting for this event since the day it was announced. A card that includes middleweight dark horse Demian Maia, a fighter looking to slide his way into one of Anderson Silva's last fights.
Gabriel Gonzaga will continue his journey back into the upper echelon of heavyweights, a spot he may not have been ready for last time he was their. Joe Stevenson and Kenny Florian are fighting to take on Sean Sherk in the finals of a lightweight tournament, and then there's the main event.
Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Couture might be the most hyped up fight in UFC history. Don't believe me? Look at what UFC.com has to say about it,
"It's the biggest fight in mixed martial arts history! 3-time UFC® Heavyweight Champ Randy "The Natural" Couture returns to the Octagon™ and puts his title on the line against the biggest opponent of his career, wrestling powerhouse Brock Lesnar. Can the legend prevail? Or will a new hero rise?"
It even goes as far as to say it is the biggest fight in not only UFC history, but MMA history. And shame on all of you that said this match shouldn't even be happening.
All of those who said Brock didn't earn the right to take on "Captain America" for the UFC Heavyweight championship. All of those who are now picking Brock to win the fight. So that leads me to this question, how can you pick a guy to win, when you bashed the UFC for putting him in the spot?
Tisk, tisk, tisk.
Now I must confess. I was one of those guys who disagreed with the decision to give Brock the title shot. But I never publicly bashed Brock for taking the fight, Dana White for making the fight, or the entire UFC for giving the fight to Brock. I actually picked Brock to win from the jump.
Now I also must confess, I used to be a big WWE fan. Now before you discount my opinion as a biased and uneducated choice, I ask you to please hear me out.
My reasons for this decision are as follows.
- Randy won all of his heavyweight wins by being faster than his opponent. Sorry Randy, Brock runs a 40-yard-dash in 4.7 seconds.
- We all know that Brock is strong, but let's supply that fact with some stats. Brock benches 475 and squats 695 pounds. Randy weighs less than half of what Brock benches.
- Randy always fights guys that he can out-wrestle. He gained his unanimous decision win over Tim Silvia by repeatedly taking him down. Brock is 265 lbs of solid muscle with NCAA heavyweight championships under his belt.
Now, don't get me wrong. I am by no means guaranteeing a Brock victory. At least not with two weeks still to deliberate. Randy Couture has proven time and time again that he can not be counted out.
When he announced his comeback, people were picking Tim Silvia because Randy was too old and Tim was too powerful. When Gabriel Gonzaga KO'd Mikro Cro Cop, Gonzaga was being hailed as the next heavyweight champ, until he actually stepped in the cage.
No doubt Randy has the ability to beat any fighter out there, and I mean ANY FIGHTER, I just have to pick Brock for this one.
Back to all those Brock haters who are now picking the 265 lb behemoth to lose to Randy. You should all be ashamed. I have seen my fair share of fighter-bashing and flip-flopping, but this fight has brought out the worst of it that I have ever seen.
Let me just go through a time line.
Brock Lesnar is announced as the No. 1 contender for the title
"WTF. Dana White is a disgrace of a President. How does this unproven *&#$ get a shot at the title. Who did he beat to earn that. Heath Herring, HAHAHA."
One week later
"Brock is gonna get KO'd just watch. Randy is gonna pummel this overpaid joke."
One month after the announcement
"Ya know what, Brock might have a chance. I mean, Randy hasn't fought in over a year and he's gettin old."
Today (actual quotes from Sherdog.com)
"Randy usually manipulates guys and 'imposes his will' in the clinch, but i dont see him taking brock where he wants to go. Randy will not move brock in this fight and Brock will ragdoll Randy for as long as he allows. Brock TKO by shaken-baby syndrome."
"Lesnar via KO/TKO."
"yeah it will be interesting as hell, I can see brock totally throwing randy around."
Absolutely disgraceful. Now, I love Sherdog and that is the place where I get alot of my stats from for these articles, but the posters over their are brutal. And that goes for all other forums as well. Stop flip-flopping with your decisions, if you're going to pick a fight, wait more than three minutes after it is announced.
If anyone has anything to say please don't hesitate. I encourage all types of feedback and as always I will try to get back to any questions or comments.
