NFL Free Agency 2011: Plaxico Burress to Philadelphia Eagles Whispers Heat Up

Mick AkersJun 7, 2018

With the NFL lockout rumored to be over on July 21, Plaxico Burress—one of the most sought after free agents on the market—landing with the Philadelphia Eagles is looking more and more like a real possibility this season.

The Eagles key players are expressing their hope that the Eagles sign the controversial but talented wide receiver to compliment their already dangerous receiving core of DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and Jason Avant.

Jackson and Burress spent time together in California recently, and it got Jackson thinking about what it would be like to have Burress playing down field with him and the Eagles next season.

Jackson recently told ESPN Radio,"I think he would love to come play for the Eagles, come play with me and Vick. He already kind of had a connection with [Michael] Vick, with him being in prison and him kind of talking to him before. So it might be a connection, I’d love it. But regardless, I wish the best for him, and if he was to come to Philadelphia I think it would be a dangerous combination.”

With Jackson mentioning the possible connection between Vick and Burress, Vick's recent comments on ESPN Radio's The Herd on Monday seem to back it up.

Vick told the Herd, ""I think he's an extremely good athlete, one of the best receivers ever to play the game, tremendous size and incredible abilities to make plays at any given moment in the game."

With it's two biggest stars on board the Eagles would be foolish not to do everything in their power to land Burress once the free agency period starts up.

Ever since Burress donned a Philadelphia Phillies hat upon his release form prison fans and experts have said that like Vick, Burress will need some time to adjust back to playing football, which deters them from thinking Burress would be a good fit for the Eagles.

I think it's the perfect situation for the Eagles and Burress given their already strong core of receivers would mean Burress would have time to adjust and get used to the in-game playing conditions and not be under pressure to be at his best right away.

Burress is taller than the average NFL receiver at 6'5" and could be used early on in red-zone situations where he could go up and over receivers and increase the Eagles red-zone effectiveness—where they have had trouble at times.

The Eagles landing Burress could be the one move this offseason that pushes them over the hump and have them soaring back to being a serious Super Bowl contender.
