Boise State's WAC Competition Is Pathetic

JT RayNov 1, 2008

Bronco fans, as I have sat out on the sidelines these past weeks playing Mr. Mom and fighting a nasty cold, all I have heard is what tough competition San Jose State and New Mexico State were going to be: San Jose State with the speedy defense, brothers, and so on, and then New Mexico State’s highly ranked pass defense and the air raid offense.

Nation, the fact remains that even though we all know the Broncos have yet to fire on all cylinders, neither of these games has been in doubt from the opening kickoff.

This week’s game proved yet again that the Broncos are in desperate need of joining a different conference.

Case in point: During the week the illusion of NMSU head Coach Hal Mumme reminded me a powerful nemesis.

Those who are nerdy and young enough know Mumm-Ra, from the kids cartoon Thundercats, was the so-called evil foe (yes, I am calling that towel-holding so-called offensive genius Hal Mumme Mumm-Ra).  Mumm-Ra would always talk the talk, but in the end Lion-O and the gang would force Mumm-Ra back to his evil, but delusional self.

If I were an NMSU fan, I would start attending UTEP football games and root for a team whose coach would still put a fight.  At one point the mighty great air raid offense led by Chase Holbrook attempted two passes, one incomplete and one for an interception.

Polo Gutierrez, who said “Nebraska was the best he blocked,” found out the Bronco Defensive Line was the best he wasn’t able to block.  Hal to be damned was going to run the ball even if he had zero chance of doing so.  He handed Justin Wilcox and the Bronco defense a gift tonight.

NMSU proved that despite the ineptitude up north, they are the worst team in the WAC.

To make things worse, Fresno State lived up to their mantra today by losing to “anyone, anywhere, anytime,” while Hawai’i lost to Utah State, insuring Brent Guy a job for another week.  This year's version of the WAC has taken way too many steps back.

Boise State is 8-0 and, as of this post, number 11 in the BCS.  With a dominating defense and a big road win against a ranked BCS team, when it is all said and done, the rest of the country will still say, “Who have you played?”  I, for one, will say the same.

If the MTN doesn’t want the Broncos, I say BSU should go the route of independent and become the Notre Dame of the West, where at least they would play against tougher competition instead of these pathetic WAC opponents.

P.S. Anyone remember Parker Posey as Darla in the movie Dazed & Confused and her Air Raid Drill?
