Its Halloween and Time For some Curses.

Ryan JelleyOct 31, 2008

Curse are everywhere in sports and just like rivalries everybody claims theirs is more impressive. It's Halloween and I thought I should get into the spirit of things as I bring you the Five Most Famous Sport Curses.

5. The City of Buffalo Curse

Though Buffalo homes two very popular professional sports teams the Bills in the NFL and the Sabres in the NHL, they both have one thing in common, they can't win a championship. The Bills made appearences in four Super Bowls in a row between 1990 and 1993 but were never able to win it. Sabres are 0-2 in Stanley Cup tries. Including a game 6 overtime loss to Dallas.

4. The Andretti Curse

Anyone could argue that the Andretti's are possibly the most successful racing family ever but they same to have trouble with one race. The Indianapolis 500 has been host to five different Andrettis over a span of three generations for a total of 58 times. Only once has an Andretti one it and that was by Mario all the way back in 1969.

3. Sports Illustrated Jinx

The SI curse states that whoever shows up on the cover of Sports Illustrated will eventually run into bad luck. The curse started with Eddie Matthews on the cover of the first issue back in 1954. A week after appearing on the cover he injured his hand. Seven years ago SI reviewed how many of those who appeared on their cover actually suffered the jinx and of the 2,456 that did appear 37.2 percent of them did have something unlucky happen to them. Now a player by the name of Michael Jordan appeared on the cover a record 49 times and I'm not sure if anyone can argue that his career was disappointing but still 37 percent of the time is a pretty big number.

2. Madden Curse

This is probably the most real curse in Football. Here are just a few names of those who have been hurt from appearing on the cover of the Madden video game. Garrison Hearst, Eddie George, Daunte Culpepper, Marshall Faulk, Michael Vick, Ray Lewis, Donovan McNabb, Shaun Alexander, Vince Young. All these players either got injured or something else bad happened to them after appearing on the cover of the famous video game. How real is this curse? Well it's scary enough to get Ladainian Tomlinson to turn down a spot on the cover of '08 Madden.

1. The Billy-Goat Curse

No new curse in my lifetime will ever match that of the Chicago Cubs. A 100-year drought from winning the World Series while holding onto the second most wins in baseball history should be disappointing. But add on to that with the Steve Bartman incident where the Cubs were only five outs away from a Series appearance in '03, the Black Cat Collapse of 1969, and blowing an 2-0 lead in a five-game National Championship series in 1984 can become a little disheartening but that hasn't stopped the Cubs fans from turning out as they lead the MLB with the highest turnout of fans at away stadiums.
