A Quick Thought on The Spider Wanting to Fight Again so Soon
Earlier this week, a couple of my fellow writers pointed out that Anderson Silva is wanting to get back in the Octagon and mix it up, not three weeks removed from his most recent fight.
If the Spider was calling the shots, he would apparently fight at UFC 91. It seems he is disappointed with some of the public opinion surrounding his most recent bout. There are some questions concerning his efforts.
Boy we are a fickle bunch aren't we? One day its P4P best fighter in the world, the next day its accusations of laziness, or complacency. They can't all be Bonner-Griffen fights can they?
The point is this. I read on UFC.com that Yushin Okami was going to fight Dean Lister at UFC 92. As an undercard fight.
I don't know about you but Dean Lister isn't high on my list of fighters I want to see. Not to discredit the man, but lets face it, Okami was in line, before Cote was, to fight the Spider for a title. The Cote-Silva fight was lackluster for whatever reason you want to point out.
Now Yushin is fighting a match that may not even be televised. This does not seem right considering a couple months ago he was considered next in line to challenge the throne. Nothing but an injury kept that from happening and he has gone from #1 contender for the MW belt to fightnight undercard filler. Then again if his name was Lidell we could pay to see him fight for nothing at all in a main event.
Okami is scheduled to fight a guy that is less than comparable when you consider who his opponent should have been. That original opponent sustained no damage and is already in shape for a match.
Why not blow this card out of the water and let Okami have the fight he earned before he was injured? Why not let Silva get his wish and give him the opportunity to redeem himself for what he feels was a sub-par performance?
Could you imagine, three title fights for the final card of the year? What a treat that would be. The only drawback would be the delay before getting the next title fight going but we have GSP and Penn to follow.
By the time that is over, one mediocre card later maybe another PPV Chuck Lidell fights for no reason but the UFC knows you will pay for it type, bada bing, the next month another title fight by the most rested of the current champs.
It really makes a ton of sense to me to move Lister to another bout, and let Okami and Silva have the fight that should have already taken place. This kills quite a few birds with one stone.
The card is already stacked beyond belief. This would really send it over the top. I'm not saying anything more than this just makes sense.
Yushin is the last guy with a question mark over his head for Silva. If he could beat him, assuming that was the case, then he really has no reason to stay in the division. Then he could make his move to the LW division indefinitely, leaving in his wake the ruin of the MW division.
Like a rogue Ronin Samurai leaving a war torn village, moving on to the next town to find an honorable death, if only he could find a worthy opponent.
Why not end the year with a real bang, put all the eggs in one basket and slam it on the ground. Then for Silva's new years resolution, set his eyes on a new belt. Without the distraction of trying to make lesser fighters look worthy by pretending they belong in there with him.
I'm sure there are many valid points to make against this argument but it seems right to me. What do you think?
