Felipe Massa Vs. Lewis Hamilton: Let It Begin...

Nick PogarOct 31, 2008

The clash of the titans. As we approach the testing and qualifying stints of the Brazilian Grand Prix move closer and closer. The culmination of the season and the Driver's Championship resting heavily upon the Lewis Hamilton's young shoulders. Brazilian national Felipe Massa described the track at Sao Paulo as one he knows well, one that he has grown up around as a child, and one the he is intimately involved in.

In an interview for Formula1.com, Massa stated that he knew every twist and corner and nook and cranny of the track; he stated that this was his favorite track.

The seven point lead Hamilton holds over Massa is only large enough to afford a little room for comfort and is just small enough for it all to end in tragedy. As seen last year, the championship was lost and won by a single point.

Kimi Raikkonen and Heikki Kovalainen, both out of the running, still have a vital role to play this weekend.

On Heikki's end, the McLaren Constructors's title may still be had with a one-two shot. Kovalainen must also, as a good team player, provide coverage for Hamilton as well as be on the offense against the cars in red.

Kimi Raikkonen must play a role identical as the one seen in China, he must stick close to Massa, give him room as well as encourage the lap pace. Truthfully, it all depends on how the chips fall and the line-up for these drivers on the grid and during the race.

If a McLaren is in the front pack Raikkonen will need to be there to place pressure upon whoever the driver may be. If a Ferrari is ahead, pressure must be put upon them. But only a fifth place finish is needed for Lewis to take this year's championship.

Hamilton has had issues with consistency this season. Though he is humble and mature for such a young driver, he shows his age through the mistakes he has made.

Consistency is so vital here. Hamilton, a fierce competitor, will push and push hard but a reminder that only a fifth place finish is all that is needed must be instilled. However, I still believe that Hamilton will drive aggressively, and possibly with a more aggressive attitude than ever.

The sidepod inlet reduction, as seen in the Technical Update section on Formula1.com, as well as Hamiltons furious pace at China led to the MP4-23's carbon brakes glowing red. He must sense when to ease off, he must know how to save his tyres, fuel and brakes and motor-on to simply cross the finish.

Barring any catastrophes, I believe Lewis will finally take home what he yearns for.
