2011 MLB All-Star Game: 7 Most Unbelievable Snubs

Nathan PalatskyMay 31, 2018

Every year there are guys left off the team who deserve to be All Stars.

Part of the reason is that each team must be represented. The fact that Matt Wieters is an All Star simply because he is the only remotely deserving Oriole is unfortunate.

Overall, the fans did well, with the notable exception of American League shortstop. How in the world is Derek Jeter starting in the All Star Game ahead of Asdrubal Cabrera?

But let's take a look at the seven biggest snubs.

Paul Konerko, Chicago White Sox

1 of 7

I know, you can only have so many first basemen. But .319, 21 homers and a .959 OPS ought to be enough to get you in.

Perhaps in a year at an American League park, Konerko might have found a slot, but not this year where the DH won't find itself needed.

He plays a crowded position, and its difficult to argue against anyone of them that made the team.

CC Sabathia, New York Yankees

2 of 7

Plenty of Yankees made the team. Its difficult to call one a snub, but Sabathia leads the league in wins, carries a 3.05 ERA and 106 strikeouts.

As with first basemen, there's a plethora of deserving pitchers out there, so its understandable to leave out a member of the team sending four starters and six total All Stars.

Sabathia looks to be lining up for another win-based Cy Young season. Only once has he had an ERA under three. But every year since 2007 he has had 17+ wins, 230+ innings and 195+ strikeouts.

Tommy Hanson, Atlanta Braves

3 of 7

If one Braves starter was going to make it, the right one did in Jair Jurrjens, but Hanson is 10-4 with a 2.52 ERA and 1.038 WHIP.

There are plenty of pitchers deserving of a slot in the game, and they can't all make it, but Hanson did everything he could. And be sure the 24-year-old will have plenty of All Star Games in his career.

Shane Victorino, Philadelphia Phillies

4 of 7

The Flyin' Hawaiian embodies the phrase "little bit of everything." He is batting .303 with nine homers, nine triples, 13 steals, .900 OPS and 27 walks to go with only 31 strikeouts.

He's also an excellent defender and invaluable in the clubhouse. Victorino might be the single most underrated player in baseball. He's won the last three Gold Gloves, and only has one All Star Game to his career so far.

Rest assured, there will be more before the end.

Michael Pineda, Seattle Mariners

5 of 7

Through his first 108 innings in the big leagues, Pineda carries a 2.58 ERA, 106 strikeouts and a 1.009 WHIP. What else can you ask?

He has been one of the best pitchers in baseball so far, let alone rookies. One argument in favor of this snub is that Pineda is probably on an innings limit as is, so the Mariners are probably completely fine with saving the one or two innings he could have gotten in the game.

Pineda has a long and impressive career ahead of him. Getting left out his rookie year isn't something to complain about. But the numbers deserve recognition.

Alexi Ogando, Texas Rangers

6 of 7

The Rangers have already been managing his innings, so this is another deserving pitcher whose team wouldn't mind him missing out on a couple more innings.

The Rangers almost had this guy in the bullpen to start the season, so its been a pleasant surprise to see what he's done so far. Time will tell how long he can keep it up.

Ogando is another up-and-comer who could be considered a snub, but who seems to be headed for many All Star Games in the future.

Andrew McCutchen, Pittsburgh Pirates

7 of 7

How did Carlos Beltran make the National League All-Star Team and Andrew McCutchen didn't?

Beltran's 2011 includes a .281 AVG, 12 HR,ย  3 SB, 863 OPS

McCutchen's 2011... .294, 12 HR, 15 SB, 890 OPS

I'm just saying...
