Wimbledon 2011: Semifinals and Final Predictions of the Men's Side
Wimbledon 2011 has left four players in the men's draw: No. 1 seed Rafael Nadal, No. 2 Novak Djokovic, No. 4 Andy Murray and No. 12 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
In the semifinals, Nadal is set to face the Brit Murray, while Tsonga is going to challenge red-hot Djokovic.
Andy Murray is the crowd favorite, and he has a lot of weight on his shoulders because the fans are pressuring him to win his first Wimbledon title.
Rafael Nadal is trying to defend his Wimbledon title after he won it in 2008 and 2010.
Novak Djokovic started off the year 46-1, and he is going to try desperately to not get his second loss of 2011.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the Frenchman, has been a dark horse candidate since the beginning of the tournament.
Here is what I think will happen.
Semifinal: Novak Djokovic vs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
1 of 4Head to Head: Tsonga leads 5-2
After having just knocked out six-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga must be brimming with confidence. The hard-hitting Frenchman ousted Federer in five sets and shocked everyone in London with his upset victory.
However, Novak Djokovic, who beat 18-year-old Australian Bernard Tomic, must have even more confidence, since he has only lost one match this whole year. Though grass is Djokovic's worst surface, he seems to be handling it well so far.
In this match, I think that Tsonga will be dictating the points with his booming forehand and huge serve while keeping Djokovic off balance. However, Djokovic is a fantastic defensive player, and he is capable of keeping Jo-Willy's hard shots at bay.
But I don't think he will on Friday. I am picking an upset right here.
Prediction: Tsonga in five
Semifinal: Rafael Nadal vs Andy Murray
2 of 4Head to Head: Nadal leads 11-4
Fan favorite Andy Murray has breezed through the early rounds of Wimbledon, and he is sending a message to his opponents and to his country that he wants this title. Badly. After beating unseeded Feliciano Lopez, he seems ready to face Nadal in the semis.
Defending champion Rafael Nadal just came off a win in the French Open, and he is making a bid for his third Wimbledon title and his 11th slam overall. Coming off a win against Mardy Fish, who didn't go down without a fight, he is clearly hungry for his second consecutive slam.
Given several things, including the head to head, I think Nadal knows how to handle Murray. This match will be played strictly on Nadal's terms, and Murray won't be able to withstand the game that Nadal will play.
I am very sorry to disappoint Great Britain, but Nadal is just too much for Andy Murray's game, as he has proved several times in the past.
Prediction: Nadal in four
Final: Rafael Nadal vs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
3 of 4Head to Head: Nadal leads 5-2
If all these predictions so far come true, Tsonga will have had an awesome run, but I don't think that he can go much farther, especially if he faces Rafael Nadal.
Though Tsonga normally plays matches on his terms, I think that Nadal's footwork will help him dictate play. Nadal is also a very clever, tactical player, and I think he can exploit Tsonga's weakness of lateral movement.
Also, against someone like Nadal, who gets every single ball back, it's hard to keep hitting great balls at a high level consistently. I don't think Tsonga can outlast Nadal by simply overpowering him in the long run because in my opinion, Tsonga hasn't yet proved himself as a very consistent player.
Prediction: Nadal in four
I think that Rafa will get his 11th Grand Slam, tying Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver for fourth place all time.
