Wimbledon 2011: 5 Reasons Bernard Tomic Is a Future Tennis Superstar

Matt FaulconerJun 29, 2011

Bernard Tomic has been one of the biggest surprises of this year's Wimbledon Championships at the All England Club. He has advanced to the quarterfinals and is currently locked in a battle with Novak Djokovic.

Tomic won an intense five set match against Igor Andreev early in the second round of the tournament and looked nearly unbeatable the next two matches.

He cruised to victory in straight set victories over Robin Soderling and Xavier Malisse before meeting Novak Djokovic.

Tomic came in as a huge underdog against Djokovic and has proven that he belongs in the quarterfinals. He won the second set against Djokovic and at one point appeared to be in control of the match before a third set breakdown.

With that in mind, Tomic is looking to become a star in the tennis world. There is no denying he has the chance to become one of the top ranked players in the world in the upcoming years.

Age

1 of 5

Bernard Tomic is just 18 years of age and is playing like a 25-year-old. Tomic is extremely young and still has the chance to grow as a player.

He certainly has the talent to be successful and if he can continue to develop that talent, he could quickly become a star.

If Tomic were a 30-year-old player, he would immediately be forgotten about as the next rising star. But with a teenager playing this well, it is tough to believe he will be anything less than a star.

Maturity

2 of 5

When Bernard Tomic steps on the court, he appears to bring a sense of maturity with him. He does not celebrate after every point and acts like a seasoned veteran when he wins a set.

That is tough, if not impossible to teach. It is obvious that he still plays with a fire that will drive him to be successful, but he does not get caught up in the moment like many 18-year-olds would do when faced with a quarterfinal match against Novak Djokovic.

Composure

3 of 5

Bernard Tomic has appeared very poised and under control for much of this tournament. He was able to rally after being two sets down against Igor Andreev, which is a very difficult task for an 18-year-old.

It is essential for a tennis player to have short-term memory loss, and continue on after dropping a game or a set, and it appears that Tomic has just that.

Tomic did appear to get frustrated down the stretch against Djokovic, but that is to be expected from someone that does not have much experience playing in the quarterfinals of a major tournament.

Either way, Tomic was able to keep his composure and come back to win the second set against Djokovic after dropping the first set and pushing him to the limit in the fourth set.

Ambition

4 of 5

Bernard Tomic wants to become the best. He will not allow himself to settle for anything else, and that is a must for any tennis player.

When Tomic steps on the court he displays a lot of emotion and wants nothing less than a victory in each match.

John McEnroe, who spoke with the Courier Mail in Australia, noticed the same fire and passion for the game when watching Tomic. "He looks like he's got fire and desire and he played well," he said.

There is no one better to talk about fire and desire than McEnroe. Tomic has that fire and passion, and he will use that to help him become a star.

Talent

5 of 5

The biggest factor in determining whether a player will become a star in the tennis world is his talent.

There is no denying that Tomic has all the talent in the world. It is difficult to rally from two sets down against anyone and then defeat the No. 5 ranked player in the world, Robin Soderling, in back-to-back matches.

Factoring in that the kid is just 18 years of age is enough proof that he has all the talent needed to become a star.

He may have lost to Novak Djokovic, but give the kid a couple years and he could easily be one of the top three players in the world.
