NHL Trade Scenarios 2011: Most Likely Addition for Each Team Heading into Summer

Tom SchreierJun 29, 2011

The blockbuster trade that sent Brent Burns to San Jose and Devin Setoguchi to Minnesota kicked off what should be a wild offseason.

Each team is looking to add those one or two players they need to improve next season.

Some teams have already made that trade.

Others are waiting to pull the trigger.

For the teams that have already made their big-time trade, I've addressed it in this slideshow.

For the others, I've identified the player they need to add in order to improve next season.

Anaheim Ducks

1 of 30

The Ducks need to bolster an inexperienced defensive corps, and Hal Gill is in the last year of his contract.

Boston Bruins

2 of 30

The Big Bad Bruins could add size by bringing in Nik Antropov.

He's got two years left on his contract, but would be a great fit in Boston, and he probably would stick around for a little longer.

Buffalo Sabres

3 of 30

Recently, the Islanders traded Christian Ehrhoff to the Sabres.

Odds are, Buffalo is not going to do anything more dramatic in the offseason.

Calgary Flames

4 of 30

Calgary is always looking for experience to try and give them one last push.

St. Louis went through a major overhaul and may be willing to part with Barret Jackman, who is in the last year of his contract.

Carolina Hurricanes

5 of 30

The Hurricanes could use a little more firepower up front, especially from a veteran.

Columbus looks all-in, but may be willing to deal R.J. Umberger if they get the right deal.

Chicago Blackhawks

6 of 30

Michael Frolik and Rostislav Olesz should thrive now that they are out of Florida and playing for a contender.

Colorado Avalanche

7 of 30

The Blackhawks were willing to dump off Brian Campbell's massive contract.

They would deal Marian Hossa if they get the right offer.

Colorado is well below the cap and would love to add a player with a scoring touch.

Columbus Blue Jackets

8 of 30

Bringing in Jeff Carter has greatly changed the look of this franchise.

A Rick Nash-Derick Brassard-Carter line is going to be feared in the Central.

Dallas Stars

9 of 30

Dallas was adamant last year about adding leadership, and they can do just that by bringing in Jarome Iginla, a player they originally drafted in 1995.

Detroit Red Wings

10 of 30

The Red Wings will need to replace Ruslan Salei if he does not re-sign.

Colin White is more expensive, but is a better player and would be willing to waive his no trade clause to go to a contender.

Edmonton Oilers

11 of 30

Edmonton is in need of a goaltender and will be looking at Jonas Gustavsson, 26, if James Reimer gets that starting job in Toronto.

Florida Panthers

12 of 30

What goes around comes around.

Florida GM Dave Tallon signs Brian Campbell to a massive, expensive contract (eight years, $57 mil) in 2008 when he was with the Blackhawks.

Three years later, Campbell joins his team as a Panther.

Los Angeles Kings

13 of 30

Jason Spezza has four more years left at $7 million per, but the Kings have cap room and could use his production up front.

Minnesota Wild

14 of 30

The Wild made their move, adding Devin Setoguchi in a trade which shipped fan-favorite Brent Burns out of town.

Setoguchi has the propensity to shoot the puck, which will be much appreciated on a pass-happy Minnesota club.

If he scored 40 goals, the move looks brilliant. If he struggles and scores around 20, fans will be itching to have Burns back.

The silver lining is that Burns was in the last year of his contract and may have left with less value, something Minnesota fans are familiar with after seeing Marian Gaborik skip town.

Montreal Canadiens

15 of 30

He's a big name in Tampa and part of a rejuvenated franchise.

However, if the Canadiens made the right offer, they could bring Vincent Lecavalier, a hometown hero, over in a blockbuster move.

Nashville Predators

16 of 30

Zach Parise is a restricted free agent, but there's no promise he'll stay in New Jersey.

The Predators have to sign Shea Weber, but they have cap space and need to retain the city's interest in the team.

Bringing Parise to Nashville would do just that.

New Jersey Devils

17 of 30

The Devils need a goaltender for the future.

Anders Lindback is one of many great goaltenders to be trained in Nashville, and odds are, the Preds will keep Pekka Rinne.

New York Islanders

18 of 30

The Islanders will need a veteran presence on the ice.

They may be willing to take Jason Blake off the Ducks' hands in order to fill that void.

New York Rangers

19 of 30

The Rangers, like many teams in New York, may be willing to take a gamble to improve their team and make MSG the place to be during their home games.

They have cap space, and Chicago may want to unload Marian Hossa's contract.

Ottawa Senators

20 of 30

The Senators need someone to shore up their porous defense.

Andy Sutton may just be the man to do that.

Philadephia Flyers

21 of 30

The Flyers are going younger and could use a young defensemen into the mix.

Alexander Edler has shown promise with the Canucks, is only 25 and would allow the Flyers to let Matt Carle or Braydon Coburn (both UFAs after this season) to walk.

Phoenix Coyotes

22 of 30

Cam Barker has worn out his welcome in Minnesota, but Phoenix may take a one-year risk on him in order to see if they can tap into his potential.

Pittsburgh Penguins

23 of 30

Matt Cooke is liked in Pittsburgh, but his penchant for drawing suspensions does not help the team.

Brad Staubitz is a physical player who does not frequently cash checks to the league office and is in the final year of his contract in Minnesota.

San Jose Sharks

24 of 30

The Sharks shored up their defensive corps by adding Brent Burns.

Burns is a physical player who can mix it up if he needs to.

The key with him is keeping him healthy and getting him signed for next season.

He'll make $3.55 million this year.

St. Louis Blues

25 of 30

The Blues acquired Kevin Shattenkirk in the Erik Johnson deal, but may want to add another defensemen.

Cam Barker would come with a one-year deal, and Minnesota doesn't want him.

He might be worth a shot.

Tampa Bay Lightning

26 of 30

With their cap space and desire to get prospects for a great player, they may sign Tomas Vokoun to a deal and trade him.

The Bolts need a goaltender, and Vokoun is a familiar (played in the division), well-priced ($5.7 million last year) and experienced (age 34) player.

Tampa is in win now mode and cannot rely on youth or the aged Dwyane Roloson (41) to repeat his performance last year.

Toronto Maple Leafs

27 of 30

He's already listed in this slideshow, but I could see Jason Spezza going to Toronto also.

It would be a great way for the Leafs to stick it to the Senators if Spezza plays better in blue.

Vancouver Canucks

28 of 30

The Canucks have a lot of defensemen on the payroll and Philly is blowing up their team.

In a bold move, Vancouver offers three players to the Flyers for Chris Pronger, a proven winner.

Washington Capitals

29 of 30

The Capitals could replace Scott Hannan with a cheaper option in Mark Eaton.

Winnipeg Jets

30 of 30

It's unlikely, but Winnipeg would generate a lot of attention in the city (on top of what they already have) by bringing back former Jets Shane Doan and Teemu Selanne.

Shane Doan was drafted seventh overall in 1995 and played one season in Winnipeg before the original Jets moved to Phoenix.

Drafted 10th overall in 1988 by the Jets, Selanne played in Winnipeg from 1992-93 to 1995-96.
