Super Spurs stun Arsenal to draw 4-4; Chelsea & United both pick up wins

Arsenal 4 - Tottenham 4 (Premier League, October 29, 2008) In the London derby, Tottenham stunned the Emirates into silence with a wonder strike from David Bentley after 13 minutes. Modric won the ball in midfield, Jenas chested the ball down to David Bentley, who flicked the ball up and volleyed it from fully 35-yards. But Spurs couldn’t hold onto their lead, and Arsenal drew level when Mikael Silvestre got ahead of Jenas from a corner to head home the leveller. Spurs were then undone by another set piece immediately after the restart, William Gallas heading home Fabregas’ free-kick. Arsenal then scored a quality third, Nasri was played through the middle and he chipped the onrushing Gomes, with Adebayor applying the finishing touch over the line. Back came Spurs, Huddlestone’s drive was spilled by Almunia and Darren Bent scored from the rebound. But the Gunners quickly reasserted their authority on the game, Hutton sloppily gave the ball to Adebayor, he picked out van Persie and the Dutchman drove home number four. But the scoring still wasn’t over, Clichy’s slip presented the ball to Jenas and the Spurs captain drove forward before curling a left-foot beauty past Almunia. And just when the game couldn’t get more crazy, in the 93rd minute Modric smacked a shot against the post and Aaron Lennon was in the right place to score the equaliser. This was one of the truly great Premier League matches.

Hull 0 - Chelsea 3 (Premier League, October 29, 2008) It took Chelsea just three minutes to take the lead at Hull, Frank Lampard scoring with a breathtaking chip which drifted into the top corner of Myhill’s goal. Anelka then dragged a shot wide, while Geovanni made life awkward for Petr Cech with a free-kick (both chances here). (First half highlights here.) The Blues doubled their lead early in the second half as Anelka chased down a long hopeful ball forward, and after indecision in the Hull backline, Anelka slotted home. Chelsea’s third was pure class as the Blues work the ball on the left hand side before Malouda turned home a beautiful cross to kill the game.

Manchester United 2 - West Ham 0 (Premier League, October 29, 2008) Manchester United made light work of taking the lead over the Hammers, Nani had plenty of time to pick out Ronaldo who slotted the ball home with ease. United quickly made it two, Dimitar Berbatov produce some wonderful skill to keep the ball in on the touchline, before teeing up Ronaldo for an easy second.

Kilmarnock 1 - Celtic 3 (Insurance League Cup, October 29, 2008) Scott McDonald got Celtic off to a perfect start at Kilmarnock with a header from a corner.

Bologna 1 - Juventus 2 (Serie A, October 28, 2008) Pavel Nedved, who has been in sparkling form of late, gave Juventus an early lead at Bologna with a brilliant solo goal, cutting in from the left and firing home with his right foot. After the break Nedved doubled both his and Juve’s advantage as his near-post cross crept into the net. Marco Di Viao scored a consolation for Bologna in the final stages.

AC Milan 2 - Siena 1 (Serie A, October 28, 2008) Inzaghi took a pass from Gennaro Gattuso to put Milan ahead in the 31st, then earned a penalty that Kaka converted in the 65th after Siena captain Simone Vergassola had equalised in the 54th.

Napoli 3 - Reggina 0 (Serie A, October 28, 2008)

Hamburg 2 - Stuttgart 0 (Bundesliga, October 29, 2008) Hamburg took the lead against Stuttgart through Trochowski’s 17th minute penalty. Mathijsen made sure of the points with a 73rd minute with a deflected volley from a corner.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1 - Bayern Munich 2 (Bundesliga, October 29, 2008) Eintracht Frankfurt took the lead against Bayern thanks to a Demichelis own goal, but Ribery lead the Bayern fightback, burst down the right and crossing for Klose to level. And the favour was returned minutes later, Klose picked out Ribery on the edge of the box and the Frenchman volleyed Bayern into the lead.

Bochum 1 - Hoffenheim 3 (Bundesliga, October 29, 2008) Bochum took the lead in the third minute, and Hoffenheim struggled to get back in the game before Demba Ba put levelled just past the hour. Vedad Ibisevic converted a penalty to take his goal tally for the season to 11 and Carlos Eduardo made certain of the win with a deft finish a minute later.

Wolfsburg 3 - Monchengladbach 0 (Bundesliga, October 28, 2008)

Sochaux 0 - Lyon 2 (Ligue 1, October 28, 2008) The reigning champions made hard work of seeing off rock-bottom Sochaux, with Karim Benzema settling their nerves with a cracker in the 64th minute and Cesar Delgado wrapping up the victory in stoppage-time.

Nantes 1 - Marseille 1 (Ligue 1, October 28, 2008) Remi Mareval struck an absolute stunner to give Nantes the lead, burying an unstoppable shot tight in the top corner of the net. But Marseille levelled with a superb goal of their own, Bacary Kone smashing home an equaliser just under the bar.

Caen 1 - Nice 1 (Ligue 1, October 28, 2008)

PSG 0 - Toulouse 1 (Ligue 1, October 28, 2008) Claude Makelele suffered the indignity of putting through his own net on 65 minutes to hand the visitors all three points.

Heracles 1 - Ajax 3 (Eredivisie, October 29, 2008) Luis Suarez put Ajax in the lead within sixty seconds, but Heracles equalised through Wuytens. (First half highlights here.) Klaas-Jan Huntelaar sowed up the points for Ajax in the second half, netting a brace.

Volendam 2 - Willem II 2 (Eredivisie, October 28, 2008) Volendam, without a win this season, appeared to be in danger of another loss when goals from Sergio Ziljer and Paul Quasten gave Willem II the lead after Melvin Platje had fired the home side ahead. But Paul De Lange found the target in the 76th minute with a brilliant strike to secure a much needed draw for Volendam, although the result was not enough to lift them off the foot of the table.

Ankaragucu 0 - Fenerbahce 1 (Turkish Cup, October 29, 2008) Semih Senturk settled the match with a super strike.

Diagoras Rodou 2 - Olympiakos 3 (Greek Cup, October 29, 2008)

Maccabi Netanya 1 - Maccabi Haifa 4 (Toto Cup, October 29, 2008) Gdir and Katan gave Haifa a two goal lead, and Netanya’s task became that much harder when they went down to 10-men for an awful foul. Arbeitman’s storming header made it 3-0, and after the hosts pulled a goal back Arbeitman slid home Haifa’s fourth.

Atlante 2 - Montreal 1 (CONCACAF Champions League, October 28, 2008) Joey Gjertsen opened the scoring for the Impact in the 4th minute with a fine solo run and shot from distance, but the lead was short lived as Clemente Ovalle tied the game in the 13th minute after some horrendous defending. Atlante got the winner seven minutes from time, Gabriel Pereyra bundling the ball home from a corner.

CD Olimpia 4 - Joe Public 0 (CONCACAF Champions League, October 28, 2008) Dos Santos picked up a brace in the first half while Oscar Boniek Garcia and Nestor Fabian Silva completed the rout after the break.
