Travelers Championship: Quotes of the Week

Fredrik Jacobson held on to win the 2011 Travelers Championship this afternoon in Cromwell, CT. But, like many professional sporting events, what transpired on the course was only half of the fun.

What is said in the media center can often be more entertaining than any single shot hit all week.

Here are the top quotes of the week from the Travelers Championship.

Bubba Watson on how to play the drivable par-four 15th hole strategically:

“A wedge, sand wedge, putt.”

And you know what, that actually would be the most strategic way for Watson to play the 15th.

Zach Johnson

Zach Johnson on what he would do during the long break between rounds due to a 6-hour rain delay on Thursday:

“I'm going to probably go putt for five minutes, and then I'll probably eat again and sleep.”

During a three-day stretch as long as Thursday-Saturday at the Travelers Championship, eating and sleeping probably was a lot more important than putting practice.

Webb Simpson

Webb Simpson on what he did during a long delay between rounds on Friday:

“Sat out here for a lot of it, and then we went back to the room and started playing 'Words With Friends' on my iPhone with my caddie, who was five feet next to me.”

Now that's a new low for lack of communication between player and caddie.

“I had been working the whole week before trying to get my club face back to square, and I couldn't do it because I would just work the club back into my hands where I like the reminder to be, and that was shut every single time.

"I was honestly going crazy these last few weeks because I'm like I'm swinging really good. I have no idea why I'm hitting the ball so bad. And yeah, that was it. I'm going to give [the equipment team] a very hard time next week, let's just say.”

Fredrik Jacobson on a promise he made to his daughter:

"We were watching from the FedEx Cup all the winners when they had the recap after the final event, and everybody was just hoisting trophies left and right, and sitting there with my kids, and you know, my middle one, Emmie, she goes "Daddy, why don't you have any trophies at home?"

"Well, I got a couple in Sweden, but they're in the garage. But I told her, "I promise you I'll get one this year for you." And it's been haunting me. I've been on the board; I've been asked so many times by the kids, "did you get a trophy this week, Daddy? Did you get a trophy?"

"Nope, no trophy.  But I'm coming home. So I'm excited about that. I'm glad I'm not breaking that promise for her."
