Wimbledon 2011: Venus and Serena Williams Headed for Another Title Showdown

Diana Sir LouisJun 26, 2011

As we head into the second week of play, it appears that Venus and Serena are headed for another epic showdown for the Wimbledon title. Just like every other tournament the Williams sisters are in, the controversy is swirling. Is either sister healthy enough to make it through two weeks of a Grand Slam? Do they have enough drive to win it or is this their last hurrah?

Both Venus and Serena have survived the first three rounds to make the round of 16. However, there has been little in the way of competition. The other 14 players left are hardly the caliber of Venus and Serena. Venus is looking fit and her play has been almost seamless. Serena has had a tougher time that Venus, but has not lost a beat in the year since she played last.

Their only true competition will come from Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka. Sharapova has won here before in 2004 and is looking reclaim her glory. She knows Wimbledon well and can handle all the pressures of a Grand slam. Unfortunately, she has quite gotten over her shoulder injury. Until Sharapova is in top form, it is doubtful she could beat either of the Williams' sisters.

Victoria Azarenka is in top form and appears poised to finally make her move and prove she has what it takes to be a Grand Slam champion. This is the second week of the tournament and things are going to get tougher from here.

Azarenka is going to have to change up her game and volley more consistently than she has so far if she is to take on the William's sisters. That big serve will definitely help her this next week. Now, she will have to put it all together and leave it out there on the court.

Caroline Wozniacki could be the wild card here, although she has choked at every Grand Slam since she turned pro. She has a great physical game and the weapons to go with it. What she is lacking is the one thing she will need to beat Venus or Serena: the mental fortitude to win a Grand Slam title.

Venus and Serena have played each other four times for the Wimbledon title with Serena edging out Venus 3-1. If these two make it to the finals, it will be a match worth of watching.
