MLB Predictions: How All 30 Teams' Rotations Will Look in 10 Years

Josh SchochJun 24, 2011

Pitching can dominate MLB, and it is arguably the most important aspect of the game. This list will predict how each pitching staff will look one decade from now.

The way to figure out how a pitching staff will look in 10 years requires a few steps.

First, we must look at the young pitchers on the staff now. Knowing that starters will stop pitching well enough to be on the staff around age 35, we should only include pitchers who are 25 or younger.

Second, we must look at the farm systems. Young, talented pitching prospects will come up to the Majors over time, and they must be evaluated based on potential.

Third, we need to evaluate GMs. Certain GMs are known for making blockbuster trades, and those trades will bolster the pitching staffs of these teams.

So, bearing these factors in mind, we will now go through each team and predict what their pitching staff will look like.

Baltimore Orioles

1 of 30

The Baltimore Orioles have a few good pitchers who will be available for the 2021 season.

Zach Britton, Jake Arrieta, Chris Tillman, Brian Matusz and Brad Bergesen have all been promoted to the Majors this season, and they are all 25 or younger, meaning that they will be ready to pitch in 10 years.

The Orioles also have Ryan Berry, Bobby Bundy, Wynn Pelzer and Chorye Spoone who are still in the minors, and they have potential to be pretty good starters.

The Orioles spent their fourth overall pick in the MLB draft on Dylan Bundy, a starting pitcher who they have high hopes for.

My concern with the Orioles is that they will trade away some of their prospects for a bat or two, and they will get the short end of the stick.

The Orioles have some talent available, and they could be in the middle of the league in pitching in 10 years.

Boston Red Sox

2 of 30

The Boston Red Sox do not have any young pitchers under the age of 25 who will still be pitching for them during the 2021 season.

In the 2010 MLB draft, the Red Sox got Anthony Ranaudo and Brandon Workman. Ranaudo has been unbelievable.

The Red Sox already had Drake Britton in their system and, while he has struggled at times, Boston still expects him to do very well.

The Red Sox took pitcher Matt Barnes with their first-round pick in the 2011 MLB draft. Barnes has potential to become a great pitcher, but the Red Sox could trade him.

The Red Sox have had a revolving door to their clubhouse. They trade players who aren't performing well, and they trade prospects for big league talent. The Red Sox also sign a lot of free agents so, while they don't have the best depth in their farm system, they can still have a good pitching staff in 10 years.

New York Yankees

3 of 30

The New York Yankees are always good, but they usually sign big-name free agents instead of bringing up their own talent.

The Yanks have a good young pitcher in Ivan Nova, who is only 24 years old right now.

The Yankees actually have some good pitching prospects now. They have three great pitchers: Dellin Betances, Andrew Brackman and Manny Banuelos. These three guys are all great pitchers, and they should become good MLB pitchers soon.

The Yankees are not relying solely on these three guys, however. They also have a lot of pitchers with big potential like Tommy Kahnle, Brett Marshall, Jose Ramirez and Bryan Mitchell.

The Yankees have a lot of potential in their farm system, and they have a GM who can land some big-name players through either trades or free agency.

The Yankees will have a good pitching staff in 2021, you can count on that.

New York Yankees v. Chicago Cubs

Tampa Bay Rays

4 of 30

The Tampa Bay Rays have some good young pitchers on their staff now. They have David Price (25), Wade Davis (25) and Jeremy Hellickson (24).

The Rays have Matt Moore, who has led the minors in strikeouts two years running. They also have Alex Torres, who has dominated Triple-A and should come up to the Majors sometime soon. Alex Colome needs to work on his command, but besides that he can be an ace.

Besides their big three, the Rays also have Enny Romero, Nick Barnese and Jake Thompson, who can all be good in time. The Rays have a lot of depth because after these guys they also have Alex Cobb, Joe Cruz and Braulio Lara, and solid bullpen options with Zach Quate and Scott Shuman.

The Rays have young pitching on their team, a lot of talent in the minors and they could become the best pitching team in the majors in 10 years.

Toronto Blue Jays

5 of 30

The Toronto Blue Jays traded away Roy Halladay to bring some young talent to their team, and they are looking toward the future.

From that trade, the Blue Jays acquired Kyle Drabek from the Philadelphia Phillies, and he had a good start to the season before being demoted back down to Triple-A. Drabek has the potential to become an ace for the Blue Jays in time, and he could be their next great pitcher in 10 years.

The Blue Jays currently have 24-year-old Zach Stewart in the Majors right now, and he could be a good veteran in 10 years.

The Blue Jays essentially have three good pitchers in their minor league system right now: Asher Wojciechowski, Deck McGuire and Aaron Sanchez. These three guys all have the potential to be good, but the Blue Jays are lacking after that.

The Blue Jays should be a middle-of-the-pack pitching team again in 2021 if Drabek stays—otherwise, they could be a lot worse.

Chicago White Sox

6 of 30

The White Sox are going to have some rebuilding to do soon.

Chicago currently has Chris Sale as their best reliever, and he has just come out of the minors. They also have Gregory Infante still in the minors, and he should be good too.

After those two there is just about nothing left. Jacob Petricka has hit 100 mph on the gun, but besides that he still has a lot of work to do.

The White Sox do not sign big-name pitchers, and they don't have a lot of trade bait. In 10 years, the White Sox could have one of the worst pitching staffs in MLB.

Cleveland Indians

7 of 30

The Cleveland Indians surprised us this season, and it is thanks to their young pitching.

The Indians have starter Carlos Carrasco looking good on the mound, and he is only 24 years old.

In the minors, the team has Drew Pomeranz and Alex White, both of whom could become MLB pitchers very soon. These two guys are the future of Indian pitching, and they should be very good in 10 years.

After these two comes the team's biggest pay-off from the Cliff Lee trade to Philadelphia, Jason Knapp. Knapp has a high-90s fastball, good off-speed stuff and he is one of the best pitchers in the minors when he's healthy.

Nick Hagadone is a great reliever in Triple-A, and he has been dominate so far. The Indians could call him up sometime this season. The Indians also have Joe Gardner, Hector Rondon, Kyle Blair and Felix Sterling in the minors.

The Indians have a lot of good pitching prospects, and they could be one of the best pitching staffs in the league in 10 years.

Detroit Tigers

8 of 30

The Detroit Tigers have a good amount of talent in their pitchers from MLB down.

In MLB, the Tigers have 22-year-old Rick Porcello, who will still be pitching well in 10 years.

In the minors, the Tigers lead off with Jacob Turner. Turner is a Justin Verlander-type pitcher, who has a fastball in the high-90s and has good breaking pitches as well. Turner could be seen in the Majors as soon as this season.

After Turner, the Tigers have a trio of good pitchers in Andy Oliver, Chance Ruffin and Casey Crosby. These three guys have all been great, and they could all see action in MLB in as little as two or three years.

Bruce Rondon, Drew Smyly and Jose Ortega are right behind these three pitchers, while Duane Below, Matt Hoffman and Lester Oliveros give the team depth.

The Tigers have a lot of good, young pitchers and they could be a top-tier pitching staff in 10 years.

Kansas City Royals

9 of 30

The Kansas City Royals have a lot of depth in their minor league system at the pitching position.

The Royals start with 22-year-old Danny Duffy, who is currently in MLB. Duffy has had an interesting story in MLB, leaving the game for a period for unknown reasons and then returning spectacularly. Duffy has a lot of talent, and he could become an ace over time.

The Royals grabbed Tim Melville, John Lamb and Mike Montgomery in 2008, giving them good talent to lead their farm system. In 2009, the Royals drafted Aaron Crow in the first round, and then got Chris Dwyer to make their minor league system one of the best in pitching.

From the recent Zack Greinke deal, the Royals got Jake Odorizzi and Jeremy Jeffress, both of whom are top-notch pitching prospects, and Odorizzi is possibly the best.

The Royals will have an excellent pitching staff in 10 years if they can keep these guys on the team.

Minnesota Twins

10 of 30

The Minnesota Twins do not have any pitchers in MLB under the age of 25, which means that they have some work to do.

The Twins have Kyle Gibson, their first pick from the 2009 MLB draft, and he has rebounded nicely from some arm issues. Now Gibson could be in MLB as soon as this season.

The Twins then have Liam Hendriks from Australia, Adrian Salcedo from the Dominican Republic, flamethrower Dakota Watts, Carlos Gutierrez from the U and Alex Wimmers, who was the team's first pick in the 2010 draft.

The Twins have a pretty good farm system, but they will need to have a blockbuster trade if they want to become a good pitching staff in 10 years.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

11 of 30

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have some good young pitchers, but only one will still be doing well in 10 years.

Tyler Chatwood is a starter for the the team, and he is only 21 years old. Chatwood has a lot of potential and, at 31, he would be just past his prime in 10 seasons.

The Angels had a great 2010 draft for pitching talents, getting Cam Bedrosian and Daniel Tillman, both of whom are excellent pitchers.

Garrett Richards, Fabio Martinez and Trevor Reckling give the staff some depth, and they will be a decent pitching staff in 10 years.

Oakland Athletics

12 of 30

The Oakland Athletics' top two pitchers are both 25 or younger. Trevor Cahill (23) and Gio Gonzalez (25) are listed as their top two guys, and that gives them a bright future.

In 10 years, these two guys will be veterans who are still pitching pretty well, and teaching their young prospects.

Tyson Ross, Ian Krol, Fautino de los Santos, Trystan Magnuson, Johnathan Joseph and Michael Ynoa are their best prospects. None of these guys are going to become stellar, but they can all be pretty good.

The Athletics will have a decent staff in 10 years.

Seattle Mariners

13 of 30

The Seattle Mariners have two young pitchers who will still be good in 10 years.

Felix Hernandez (25) and Michael Pineda (22) are both going to be good for a long time, and the Mariners can have them both teach and pitch for a decade.

The minor league system for the Mariners has a lot of players who have been there for what seems like forever, so they won't be able to help in 10 years.

The Mariners' only young talents are Taijuan Walker, Stephen Pryor, Jordan Shipers and Erasmo Ramirez. The Mariners can only bank on one or two of these guys turning out to be good, so they are in trouble.

Unless the Mariners trade King Felix (which they have said they won't), the outlook for their pitching staff in 10 years is bleak.

Texas Rangers

14 of 30

The Texas Rangers have a good future ahead of them in terms of pitching.

They currently have Derek Holland (24) and Matt Hairston (25) to go along with closer Neftali Feliz (23), as their talented pitchers in the Majors who are 25 or younger.

Down in the minors, the Rangers have future-ace Martin Perez. Perez had a rough time in the minors before he was 20, but now he is mowing batters down.

The Rangers also have Michael Kirkman, Robbie Erlin, Miguel de los Santos and Robbie Ross. These four guys are all very good, and I would expect at least two to be good in the future. After these four, the Rangers have Tanner Scheppers, Joe Wieland and David Perez.

Roman Mendez, Wilmer Font, Justin Grimm, Luke Jackson and Barret Loux give the Rangers depth, and they have arguably the best farm system in terms of pitching.

The Rangers have a bright future ahead of them, and it is thanks to their young pitching.

Atlanta Braves

15 of 30

The Atlanta Braves have a lot of young talent on their team.

The Braves have three pitchers who are 25 or younger: Jair Jurrjens (35), Brandon Beachy (34) and closer Craig Kimbrel (33).

In the minors, the Braves have quite a few good pitchers, including: Julio Teheran, Mike Minor and Randall Delgado, Arodys Vizcaino, J.J. Hoover, Brett Oberholtzer, Carlos Perez and David Hale.

The Braves have a good mix of top-notch pitchers, young talent with potential, and solid pitchers who can be middle-of-the-rotation guys.

The Braves will have a great pitching staff in 10 years, and they will be a playoff team.

Florida Marlins

16 of 30

The Florida Marlins farm system has been great the last few years, paying off with players like Josh Johnson and Anibal Sanchez, but they don't have a lot left.

The Marlins have only Chris Volstad as a young pitcher in the Majors at age 24.

In the minors, the Marlins have Chad James, their first-round pick from 2009, and he is their only prospect who could become a really good pitcher.

After James, the Marlins have a lot of decent prospects, like: Brad Hand, Jhan Marinez, Jose Ceda and Dan Jennings.

The Marlins are not looking good for the future, and they might be one of the worst staffs in the league in 10 years.

New York Mets

17 of 30

The New York Mets have had their struggles over the past few seasons, and they might have some more coming up.

The Mets currently have Johnathan Niese (24) and Dillon Gee (25) as their aces under 25, and they both have a lot of potential, especially Gee.

In the minors, the Mets have Jenrry Mejia, Matt Harvey, Brad Holt and Jeurys Familia. Of these four, three of them have been good, but Mejia needs Tommy John surgery.

The Mets have a potential future if these four guys all do well, but they have next to no depth behind them.

Philadelphia Phillies

18 of 30

The Philadelphia Phillies have a bright future ahead of them.

The Phillies currently have Vance Worley (23) and Antonio Bastardo (25) pitching for them, and they are both doing incredibly well. The Phillies will also have Cole Hamels on the team for another nine years or so, and he can teach the young pitchers well.

Hamels is an ace himself, and he is learning from the best, including Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cliff Lee this season.

The Phillies also have three more aces in Brody Colvin, Jarred Cosart and Trevor May. These three guys are possibly the future of the Phillies, and they could keep the Phillies on top.

Besides those three guys, the Phils also have Jesse Biddle and Phillippe Aumont.

The Phillies will have another great staff in 10 years.

Washington Nationals

19 of 30

The Washington Nationals have young pitching led by Stephen Strasburg.

Beside Strasburg, the Nationals also have 25-year-old Jordan Zimmerman. Strasburg and Zimmerman both have potential, and they could lead the Nationals to the top of the NL East.

In the minors, the Nationals have a lot of new faces and a lot of players who won't be around in 10 years.

Of the new faces, Sammy Solis and A.J. Cole are the best, and therefore could join Strasburg and make Washington's rotation very good. Beside these two, the Nationals also have Cole Kimball, Brad Peacock, Brad Meyers, Adam Carr, Hassan Pena, Yunesky Maya, Robbie Ray, Danny Rosenbaum and Trevor Holder.

The Nationals will have a pretty good rotation in 10 years, but they won't be the best.

Chicago Cubs

20 of 30

The Chicago Cubs do not have any remarkable pitchers who are 25 or under, and they could have a problem in the future.

The Cubs have only two good pitching prospects in their farm system, Trey McNutt and Rafael Dolis. These two could both be good, but I only see one panning out.

The Cubs don't have a lot of options for pitchers, and they might be the worst staff in MLB in 10 years if they don't fix their current situation.

Cincinnati Reds

21 of 30

The Cincinnati Reds have Aroldis Chapman, but that's about it.

The Reds have only Johnny Cueto (25) and Mike Leake (23) to join Aroldis Chapman as their good pitchers who are 25 or younger.

Cincinnati's farm system is pretty weak. Kyle Lotzkar has not panned out since being drafted in 2007. Drew Cisco has potential, but has not shown anything yet, and Donnie Joseph hasn't done much yet either.

The Reds have tried to address this issue, drafting Robert Stephenson in the first round on the 2011 draft. The Reds may have some of the best positional prospects, but they are bad when it comes to pitching.

The Reds are going to have to make a lot of trades if they want to have a good staff but, as for now, the Reds will be terrible in 10 years.

Houston Astros

22 of 30

The Houston Astros have very few young, talented pitchers.

The Astros have Jordan Lyles, a 20-year-old starter for the Astros, and he has the potential to be an ace.

In the minors, their next best bet is Mike Foltynewicz—after him, they don't have a lot left. The Astros seem to be in a spot that they cannot get out of.

The Astros cannot get much good pitching outside of these two guys, and they don't even have good positional prospects.

Milwaukee Brewers

23 of 30

The Milwaukee Brewers traded away a lot of prospects to get Zack Greinke.

The Brewers still have 25-year-old Yovani Gallardo in MLB. Gallardo will still be pitching in 10 years, and he will also help teach the younger guys.

In the minors, the Brewers have Mark Rogers, who is also 25. They also have Wily Peralta, Cody Scarpetta, Tyler Thornburg and Kyle Heckathorn.

The Brewers don't have a lot of bright spots, and they will be a bad pitching rotation in 10 years.

Pittsburgh Pirates

24 of 30

The Pittsburgh Pirates are a pretty young team, but they are not young enough to have their pitchers available in 10 years.

In their farm system, however, the Pirates have top-notch prospect Jameson Taillon, who has drawn comparisons to Josh Beckett. Taillon will be an ace in time, and he will lead the Pittsburgh staff.

They also have Stetson Allie and Luis Heredia, who are both looking good. Besides their top three, the Pirates have Bryan Morris, Zack von Rosenberg and Victor Black, Colton Cain, Jeff Locke and Rudy Owens to give them depth.

The Pirates should look good in 10 years, but they do have a tendency to trade away good prospects, so they might continue to be a basement-dwelling team.

St. Louis Cardinals

25 of 30

The St. Louis Cardinals seem to have a relatively bright future ahead of them.

The Cardinals have 24-year-old Jamie Garcia, who should still be pretty good in 10 years, and he can also teach young prospects.

In their farm system, the Cardinals have future ace Shelby Miller. Miller is a high-velocity pitcher. Miller will be an ace in a few years for sure. Right after Miller, is Dominican right-hander Carlos Martinez, who also throws hard.

The Cardinals also have Seth Blair and Jordan Swagerty, who are both good. Then there is Lance Lynn, Eduardo Sanchez, John Gast and Joe Kelly.

The Cardinals have a pretty bright future with Garcia, Miller and Martinez leading the way.

Arizona Diamondbacks

26 of 30

The Arizona Diamondbacks could have a great pitching staff in the future, but their prospects are struggling.

The Diamondbacks currently have two pretty good young pitchers in MLB. Daniel Hudson (24) and Josh Collmenter (25) are both in the Majors now, and they should still be in 10 years.

Prospects Jarrod Parker, Tyler Skaggs and Pat Corbin have all struggled, while Wade Miley has spent most of the season on the DL.

Tyler Green and J.R. Bradley are both high-risk prospects, but they are not the prospects the Diamondbacks need.

The Diamondbacks tried to address their need for pitchers by taking Trevor Bauer and Archie Bradley in the first seven picks in the 2011 MLB draft.

The Diamondbacks have some potential, but I don't see them having a very good rotation in 10 years.

Colorado Rockies

27 of 30

The Colorado Rockies have a good staff now, and a decent farm system.

The Rockies have two talented pitchers in MLB who will still be available in 10 years. Jhoulys Chacin is currently listed as their No. 2 pitcher, and he is only 23 years old. They also have 24-year-old Juan Nicasio pitching now.

The farm system for the Rockies leads with reliever Rex Brothers, who has the same potential as Chacin, despite being a reliever instead of a starter.

Next, there is 2009 first-rounder, one of the top pitching prospects, Tyler Matzek. Then there is Peter Tago, their first pick in 2010. Christian Friedrich showed skills in 2009, but has been getting worse since.

The Rockies will have a decent staff in 10 years, with Chacin, Nicasio and Brothers leading the way, and first-round pick from the 2011 draft Tyler Anderson helping them out.

Los Angeles Dodgers

28 of 30

The Los Angeles Dodgers have a bright future ahead of them, led by Clayton Kershaw.

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw is only 23, and he is already one of the best starters in the league. The Dodgers also have starter Rubby De La Rosa who is only 22.

The Dodgers' farm system comprises mainly of future ace Zach Lee. Lee has good heat, a great curve and a nasty changeup. The Dodgers also drafted Chris Reed out of Stanford this year.

Chris Withrow is an unknown for the team, showing a lot of inconsistency. Garrett Gould, Aaron Miller, Ethan Martin and Nate Eovaldi are all young guns who could help the team in 10 years.

The Dodgers seem to be set for at least a decade as long as they keep replenishing their farm system.

San Diego Padres

29 of 30

The San Diego Padres are another team that has a very young ace.

Mat Latos is a 23-year-old beast. Latos has nasty stuff, and he keeps getting better, going from a top-50 pitcher to a top-20 pitcher in just one year.

San Diego also has a deep farm system thanks to the Adrian Gonzalez trade. From that trade, the Padres acquired Casey Kelly, a top pitching prospect. Another future ace in their system is Simon Castro. Matt Lollis is another good pitcher, even if he isn't as good as the other two.

After that point, the Padres have loaded up with young guns like Keyvius Sampson, Jose DePaula, Juan Oramas and Adys Portillo.

The Padres have a very bright future ahead of them. I expect the Padres to have one of the best staffs in MLB in a few years, and they'll stay good for at least a decade.

San Francisco Giants

30 of 30

The San Francisco Giants may have won the 2010 World Series because of their talented, young pitchers, but they have no farm system left.

The Giants still have one young ace in 21-year-old Madison Bumgarner, and they should still have Tim Lincecum on the team to teach the younger pitchers.

Their farm system comprises of Zack Wheeler, Matt Purke, Tyler Matzek, Jacob Turner and Shelby Miller, all drafted in 2009. Wheeler, Eric Surkamp and Heath Hembree have all shown promise, but the others are not that good yet.

The Giants may have an awesome staff now, but they have a bleak future ahead of them.
