2011 NBA Draft Grades: Why It Is Best to Forget This Draft and Move on

Gabe ZaldivarJun 24, 2011

There was a point last night when I pounded a cup of coffee and slapped my face. It was all I could do to stay awake.

I think it happened somewhere between the the Pacers' pick of Kawhi Leonard, a forward that slipped in the first round because he never figured out how to put the round ball through the hoop from distance, and the Knicks pick of Iman Shumpert, a prospect that will one day be known as "that second guy the Knicks goofed on."

And so it went.

The 2011 NBA Draft was kind of like being on a date with the most boring person in the world. Sure, you want it all to end, but you stick around to make sure you don't miss anything. I imagine that is how Derrick Rose's dates feel like.

You have to admit the Bulls guard speaks in one tone, no matter the situation.

Last night will forever be known as the most forgettable draft in NBA history, sort of a paradox considering we will soon erase this from memory.

The start of the draft began with the worst kept secret in sports. We all knew Cleveland was going to select Kyrie Irving, a player we all agree is a tenuous first overall selection at best.

We were then subjected to player after player that the ESPN panel tried to dress up with sayings like, "upside" and "I really like this guy."

In reality, there is not a solid future All-Star among this rabble. That is the tricky part of getting excited about the 2011 NBA draft.

I found it hard to get up for players that will be role players off the bench in five years. Sure, there will be some successes of note, but none that will make you want to go back and take a gander at the mess they were drafted with.

I knew this was a shallow draft. What I didn't know was how trying it was to watch a bunch of Sasha Vujacics and Udonis Haslems get drafted.

It was like watching an NBA supplemental draft. Thursday could have easily been a second and third round draft, if we had one. To my surprise, that made for horrible television.

I am even surprised I woke up this morning.

Grade: F

This was the worst draft I have ever seen. It even made the dinner I ate taste like a back-up point guard that will never break into the starting rotation. Yeah, that's bad.
